This classic tale, deserves yearly posting every 4th of July. I forget the year of the recording... I know I have this particular show archived. 1967 perhaps?

He was a wordsmith par exsalonce! I grew up listening to him every night and developed a reading habit because of him that became obsessive.

One of great reads was Lewis Carroll's Jabberwolky.

THANKS! I've heard many old Shep broadcast, but I think somehow I've missed this story until now.

The tags on this MP3 file give the broadcast date as 7/4/1967. This is confirmed (as I'm listening now) by Shep referring to his book, In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash, being published in the previous year. That book was indeed published in '66.

I never knew of Jean Shepherd until I saw “The Christmas Story”. Then I saw one of his pieces, “Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss” done on the Disney Channel. Jean was in that last one, as Ralph’s boss at the moving company.

Thanks for updating the link. I was able to download the mp3 file, but I'm not able to access the main page at http://www.snuhfiles.com/ atm. Do you know if that site has 'Leopold Doppler and The Great Orpheum Gravy Boat Riot'? (I don't know if Shep ever read that on his show, but it's my #1 favorite, Ludlow Kissel being #2.)

A Brass Figlagee with Bronze Oak Leaf Palm to ya!

I was real close to you, Maplewood and South Orange. I had to cut through Short Hills every day to get to school at Oratory in Summit.

You’d have to give me some hints, it’s been a long time.

Jean also had a cameo in “The Christmas Story”. IIRC, he appears in the scene where the kids are lined up to see Santa.

Anyone who had read Jean Shepherd’s books knows he wrote about his life as a kid in an Indiana steel town. “Wanda Hickey’s Night of Golden Memories and Other Disasters”, “In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash” are two collections of his stories and are endlessly entertaining.

Believe PBS did a teleplay. Darren McGavin played Ralph’s old man. “That was some fourth of July.”
