Is Apple an American company? (are any Apple products even manufactured in America?)

Posted on 07/03/2010 9:43:35 PM PDT by Cringing Negativism Network

OK so America is agog. Agog I say! At the amazing new American technological marvel, the Apple iPhone 4.

Except, is the phone entirely manufactured... in Asia?

Does it matter any more? The Boeing 777 and 787 are made up of parts from all over the world. Its cheaper to build things overseas. Blame the unions. Ironically, lots of Airbus parts are made in the USA

I think this is a FUD Vanity post... asking if Apple is an American Company—PING!

PLEASE NOTE, if you post a thread on APPLE, iPHONES, iPAD, or Macs, and wish to notify the Apple/Mac,iPhone,iPad list, please have the courtesy to Ping me, so that I may ping the list. Certain anti-Apple persons, notably, for-q-clinton, PugetSoundSoldier, and a few others are deliberately NOT pinging me to their negative, anti-Apple threads... for reasons of their own.

Apple Inc. Ping!

If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.

Please don't feed the Anti-Apple Trolls™

No, unless by “stirring the pot” you mean am I pointing out that as a nation, we are surrendering every single thing which made us great.

In which case, yes. I am.

So. Is the iPhone manufactured in Asia?

Name a cell phone that IS manufactured in the United States.

The iPhone is manufactured in Asia.

The iPhones are designed in California, USA, by a California, USA, company... the processor they use is designed by a USA company... and Apple is traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange and it is incorporated in California, which, the last time I check (that could change) is still one of the fifty United States.

The last five Dell computers I installed for clients were manufactured in Asia... as were the last three HPs.

Your point is merely contentious to be contentious... FUD.

Check the net ...You can find similar complaints about any maker’s laptop . All made in China with pretty much the same innards .

So if it’s common knowledge, why do we studiously avoid talking about it?...

We don't... it's a talking point that frequently brought up... and frequently shot down for the same reasons. There is no other game to play... you want electronics manufactured, you go to Asia.

Clean your fan and cooling heat sink with canned compressed air. Sometimes they have to be taken apart which if you don't know what you are doing and have the proper dis-assembly guide, you can really screw a laptop up. But canned air does a good job and usually fixes the issue.

All laptops I have owned, Dell, HP, averatec, and others have all had that issue come up. A mac is not immune to it either. It's mostly fuzz from clothing and bed linens.

Yes, most Dells are ‘assembled’ in the U.S. but you would be hard-pressed to find a single component that was manufactured in the U.S. Almost all (if not all) computer components are manufactured in PRC (People’s Republic of China), Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia, etc. We do still make quite a few chips here but not many electronics.

Actually, even a lot of the "assembly" is outsourced now... that's why they no longer ship right away... It's assembled in China and you have to wait for your assembled computer to arrive on the next shipment... to be shipped to you. American labor piece work is too expensive... so they do "just in time" shipping on those too. One of my client's ordered two Dell Dimensions in January... custom configured with extra RAM... It could not be shipped for two weeks. A week into the order, he decided to upgrade the hard drives on both machines so we called Dell to change the work order. We were told our upgraded machines would ship in two weeks. I asked why, Couldn't they just change the work order and ship on the original schedule? I was told both of our original machines had already shipped from China and they would have to ship another two with upgraded hard drives. BOING!

You got that right, it is not just Apple, but the Windows platform computers as well.

Well the good news is that Obama’s numbers ARE GOING down and even those who have voted for him NOW have turned against him. Plus also they blame him for the oil spill in the Gulf. Obama is a “one term President”. Another Jimmy Carter.

Many Dell desktops are assembled in the US. The laptops are made in China.

Good for Apple. Doing otherwise would be a waste of capital which would have been better spent growing the economy somewhere else. Read up on comparative advantage.

Hang in there.
If the Baraqqis stay in power long enough, we’ll only be able to buy phones produced in blue states by unionized workers.
Or imported from North Korea.

> Starting to sound like a Seinfeld episode...a conversation about a conversation that is never a conversation...

Unfortunately, the Apple threads of late have had that tendency -- comments about the comments. I say this not as a fanboy of any camp, just a tech-head who's sick of it.

Typically, the anti-Apple trolls fly in like seagulls, flapping their wings and squawking, crap all over the threads, and then hijack the threads by diverting the comments into a "But you said" - "No I didn't" - "You're a liar" - "No you're a liar".... and the thread is destroyed.

What's funny is it doesn't matter whether the original thread article was pro-Apple or anti-Apple -- the seagull crap is the same, and the net effect is the same.

I posted a Windows thread a couple days ago and it fared better. But even that suffered somewhat from anti-Microsoft crap comments.

Some days I think FR has been over-run by 13-year-olds.

By the way, Cringing Negativism Network, you've been around since 2005. I believe you are being disingenuous (your #17). This vanity thread was posted as bait, and I think you know it.

I hope you find the lesson (all the comments telling you that Apple is indeed an American company, and does what nearly every other American company does -- outsource) sufficient to avoid the mistake in the future. If your campaign is against outsourcing, there are much better ways to post such a vanity.

similar to the FR retail shopping threads
“you can’t shop at _______ because”

I finally identified the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store as the only remaining acceptable option

then some anti-Catholic post made that taboo also, LOL
