City police said a downtown college student of Arabic decent whose 8-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son were left home alone Friday told officers he didn't know he couldn't do that.

More third world values brought to you by unchecked immigration.
Eight years old seems a bit young to be left in charge of a three-year-old. Though not all cultures raise their kids to be (near-)perpetually helpless children like Americans do.
(For a nation founded in independence and self-reliance, we seem to have an odd national desire to “move back in with our parents” and be bailed out, watched out for, and taken care of.)
No wonder he didn’t think anything of it. In his country, his 8 year old daughter would already be some old fart’s wife.

There really was once a time when being a kid didn't mean you were a total idiot.
I bought my first rifle when I was 11, with paper route profits, and often hunted alone. I knew what the consequences of screwing up were.
Next he'll say he was out securing jobs for the little tykes...
The news report says it was his daughter; heck, for all we know it COULD have been his wife!
In our society a child is too young to be left alone one year and the next year they are deemed old enough to make money babysitting? Two years later they are taking driver’s training. It’s a very confusing time for a parent. I’m glad my daughters are past the “if I leave them alone and something bad happens, am I going to jail age” age.
It’s **illegal** to leave an 8 year old alone with a 3-year old? Our entire culture is doomed, and deservedly so.
If it is just a cultural misunderstanding, you know, it's all about re-education
At one extreme are those cultures where 8yr olds are in actual or de-facto slavery and recruited into armies. Those cultures die because of the low regard they have for future generations.
In the healthy middle are those when an 8yr old is almost reaching the age where they are responsible enough to be trusted with important things, and where 8-10 yrs is the age when their responsibility is tested and forged. Leaving 8yr olds with 3yr olds for short periods of time if perfectly acceptable and for longer periods of time should not be frequent but is perfectly permissible. These are the cultures that take risks, grow and thrive. Think USA in the 1700s to just past the turn of the last century, and today some pasts of the developng world.
At the other extremes are where Europe is and the US seems to be heading - where we are so paranoid of everything where a law like this can make it on the books. These cultures crawl off into the corner of a closet, and wither away in fear.
