I flew into El Paso, Texas today and am speaking at the Las Cruces, New Mexico tea party rally tomorrow. Today we stopped by the El Paso City Hall today after it was hit on Wednesday during a drug cartel shootout. The cartel members were reportedly shooting at a Blackhawk helicopter in Juarez that was called to the scene. The bullets hit the Assistant City Manager’s office at the El Paso City Hall.

I was thinking of an SKS as I read El Gato's post too. Reasonably priced semi-auto rifle, recoil is not that bad, ammo is relatively cheap and fairly accurate to 100 yards. It's main advantage for self-defense is the ability to fire rapidly.

OK, I had to consult with my expert, he said the lower the gauge, the bigger the kick, the fatter the bullet/shell....
So 20 gauge would have less kick, smaller shells....
I haven’t fired a shotgun in about 20 years, used to qualify yearly. I don’t remember what I used then... *senile* :0)

What a dichotomy today is.....as I listen to the music (God Bless America, America the Beautiful, My Country ‘Tis of Thee, Star Spangled Banner, Lee Greenwood singing God Bless the USA...........and all), and see the sparkley graphics of fireworks, smell the barbeques heating up, and see all the flags...........Somehow, I feel like I’m at a FUNERAL for our country!
And, tomorrow, July 5, I must buy a shotgun.....and I cry.

I completely “hear you.” I was so depressed yesterday, today I’m trying to put it out of my mind and try to be happy... It’s so hard now, the constant assaults. And although my husband says things will get better, and that the emperor won’t be in forever, I’m doubtful.

Do you own any sort of a deer rifle? If so, get a scope on it and 300 or so rounds of ammo. Get the scope mounted and be able to hit a man size target at 400 yards.
A shotgun is fine at up the 50 feet or down a hall or across the yard but much farther than that is an iffy proposition. And I think it stands to reason that if you don’t have a handgun, then get one. A 9mm, 40 or 45 acp handgun with at least a ten round magazine is best. I dont live out there but if I did Id be carrying my Glock 19 9mm pistol.
Yorkie, if you are worried about recoil, then may I suggest you buy an AR-15 or a Ruger Mini 14 in 5.56? A handfun of 20 or 30 round mags loaded with good quality ammunition will allow you to hit bad guys at 500 yards.
A shorty AR-15, sometimes known as a CAR-15 or an M-4, can be used in a house and won’t recoil hardly at all.
