Deal, Or No Deal
July 14, 2010

If you’re like me, you love a good deal. Not just bargain shopping, but when you manage to cut a great deal for yourself without giving anything up in return. So if you can identify with these kinds of deals, you’ll understand the prodigal son’s scheme when he decided to return home.

There were three kinds of servants in those days: day workers who were paid on a day-to-day basis; hired servants who worked long hours on the estate but lived in town with their independence intact; or bond servants who lived on the estate and gave all of themselves to serving the family.

When the prodigal son hit rock bottom, it’s interesting that his planned apology involved asking if he could be like a hired servant. Why not a grateful bond servant? Some commentators suggest that perhaps he was trying to negotiate a deal—a way to get a paycheck and keep his independence as well.

Often we approach God like, “I’ll serve You but You can’t take away my freedom.” It may seem like a good deal at the time, but God’s deal is so much better. Just like the boy’s father, His arms are ready and willing to receive repentant sinners as part of His family. There could be no better deal and no better way to serve Him!

Lord, take my life and make it wholly Thine;
Fill my poor heart with Thy great love divine.
Take all my will, my passion, self, and pride;
I now surrender, Lord—in me abide. —Orr

True freedom is found in surrender to Christ.

Read: Luke 15:11-24

I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants. —Luke 15:19

Why God Made Little Boys

God made a world out of His dreams,
of wondrous mountains, oceans and streams.
Prairies and plains and wooded land,
then paused and thought, I need someone to stand
on top of the mountains, to conquer the seas,
explore the plains and climb the trees.
Someone to start out small and grow,
sturdy, strong like a tree and so...

He created boys, full of spirit and fun,
to explore and conquer, to romp and run.
With dirty faces, banged up chins,
with courageous hearts and boyish grins.
When he had completed the task He’d begun,
He surely said, "That’s a job well done."

Hello, Friends.
Happy Warm Fuzzy Wednesday

I must apologize for not being here much this week.
Tho, I would much rather stay here and play,
I've gotten so far behind with bookwork and chores that I may never catch up.

Meg ... how can we ever thank you for being a trooper and opening the doors yesterday.
Your graphic and poem were purrfect!
Hope the extra day didn't do a number on your back.

Last week, Billie told me that she was having connection problems.
I didn't realize that she meant she would be unable to be here again this week.

Time to fix Marissa's breakfast and get her to VBS.
I plan to be here off and on today ... I know that I will need a break from chores.
Here, with Friends is the perfect break room!

Wishing you a Warm Fuzzy Wednesday.

Good idea. The difficulty comes in how to do it. Give through the benevolence outreach at church? With the government millions of dollars are absorbed by the administrations of the welfare programs. Giving money on the street goes for cigarettes or drugs, alcohol often. The Salvation Army is good.
Some go from one church to the next with an unpaid utility bills, and say they are hungry ... when they are giving no outward indication of the truth of that, manicured fake nails, cell phones, flashy dress, etc. It is a puzzle how to really do good for them. I like to offer them a job when possible. We do not help them when we simply hand out money with no hope or change in their thinking or circumstance. MO

I agree... Just handouts creates a dependent society as we have today. Where is it in the Bible that states a man does not eat if he does not work? Have to find that statement..

An interesting aspect of the story of the prodigal son is the son that stayed home and worked for their father.. He was moved to jealousy by the return and celebration(fatted calf, ring, robe) for what he saw as the squandering son. Jealousy and resentment.

The Father came out o speak with him. “All I have is Yours, he said.” Luke 15:30-32

Which one are we the most alike ... the squandering son or the jealous, resentful son and all that it implies? Father, open our eyes and hearts for the truth and understanding of Your Word. Help us in our d, in Jesus name. amen.

2 Thessalonians 3:10 ASV

“For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, If any will not work, neither let him eat.”

I agree.
