New PC: WinXP or Win 7?

My old computer died the other day and I'm picking up a new one tomorrow. I always load the OS myself and for the last few times I've stayed with XP Pro SP3 because it's stable and reliable for what I use the pc for. I've heard decent things about Windows 7 but for now I'm thinking of staying with XP. If you had the chance to reload your pc today would you stick with XP or move to Win 7, and why? No flavors of Unix are an option, I'm sure it's a great OS but I want Windows for this one so just opinions on those 2 please.

I use XP every day at work and 7 at home. No question, Windows 7 is better.

It is much simpler, most devices do not need a driver disc, just plug in the USB, and it finds the correct driver and just starts working.

The task bar is much less cluttered and gives you a peak at any open window just by hovering the curser over the task bar.

It boots fast and has a lot of built in features that have replaced a number of programs I had to install on XP and Vista.

My Windows 7 went down hard last week and I posted here warning people to wait before downloading the update. After a reinstall, and further testing, I’m retracting my warning, I had a bad memory module. Windows 7 made the reinstall very easy BTW.

Why buy a computer from a telephone/gadget maker?...the XP Pro system with SP3 is real stable and they are now supposedly extending service on it, but not sure for how long...if you are a power user or a gamer, 7X64 is a blast, especially if you have 4-6+ memory...otherwise, the 64 is wasted...7 can also do an emulation of XP if you get homesick...I tend a shipload of XP machines that run fine...if you have legacy programs, do the driver check they offer and even then, you might have a problem or two, but a clean install on a new machine, I would go with 7...

Go with 7 unless you need to copy files over a vpn. I keep xp running in a vm since I need to copy files over the network a lot.

Microsoft keeps saying it’s not a problem, but I’ve had the problem since early Vista and it’s still there in 7 (and many other people have it too). And it’s not a small problem like 30 seconds vs 40 seconds. It’s 30 SECONDS on xp vs 25 MINUTES on 7. I’ve tried every “solution” I can find but none help.

Other than that 7 is nicer and faster.

XP is going to “End of Life” soon, microshaft won’t be supporting it with updates after awhile.
Vista is a KLUDGE.
That leaves you with learning Win7, but wait for the Service Packs to appear.

7 is the way to go - one issue I still have after running it for over a year now - still cant get Microsoft to help me share printers......

But other than that - 7 in 64 bit mode is all that

One of my core programs that I use at work is running off an NT server as we speak.

The scary thing is that it is still running on the original hardware. I’ve been informed by IT that they cannot install it on a new machine and when that machine dies, I have to find a new vendor and new program. I worried about it for the first 10 years.

I love Windows 7 64 bit.. I also upgraded to W7 Professional, so I could get the XP Virtual machine and run my poker game, which only runs on 24 bit..

I’m runnig a Toshiba laptop that dual boots Win7 or ubuntu. Win7 is great but I’m spending more time on ubuntu lately. Windows is a closed system whereas Linux is open, free and gives you more control over things.

When my computer was down, I tried to boot it with a live Ubuntu CD, could never get the USB ports working. It turned into a frustrating endeavor.

Gee.

My MacBook Pro is 4 years old. Haven’t had any trouble with it yet.

Not that I would ever contradict ComputerWorld. :)

If it has 4 gigs of ram and is a 64 bit machine, you’d be crazy to not load Win-7 64

The system will be a 3Ghz AMD Athlon II CPU, Asus motherboard, 2GB DDRII ram (probably add more as soon as I get it), SATA-II hard drive and DVD Burner

Once you use Windows 7, you will never want to XP again.

7 is an excellent OS.
