Thanks, I can hardly find anything on the internet about it! He is born and raised in the south so it should be an awesome experience for him!

Served in 172d LIB at Ft. Richardson in the 80’s. Had some buddies at Wainwright.

One word. Cold.

In the winter at Wainwright, it is like living on the Moon. Dark and cold.

Winter field exercises were brutal.

In the summer the mosquitoes are crazy. But it is warm.

I never made it to the town of Fairbanks. But overall I liked Alaska.

Well, he will be there for the winter but they are supposed to deploy to A’stan in March.

It must be a lot different now. We always trained for artic/winter warfare.

But that doesn’t make much sense if they are going to Afghanistan soon.

My son deploys to Afghanistan in few days. But he has been training for it in hot weather.

Jet Jag was at Eielson Air Force Base, neighbors with Ft Wainwright, but knows the weather issues for sure....IT IS COLD, REALLY COLD, in the winter. I can’t think of anyone who was up there. Hopefully, some FReeper spent some time there and can help.

There’s not much about Wainwright out there, but there should be plenty on Fairbanks. Do a search on “Fairbanks Alaska City Data” and you can get quite a bit (weather, things to do, economy, crime, etc.). There are even discussion boards that may help you.

Afganistan has both hot and cold climates depending on time of year and altitude.

Relay my thanks to your son!

I have never been there but about 80 percent of my military friends who were stationed in Alaska either retired there or moved back there after retirement.

Have been there, but not stationed there.

Cool place. Northernmost golf course on an Army base.

As in cool. You can take helo rides over the Yukon to help deliver mail, pan for gold, see the Northern Lights & Mt. McKinley up close & personal (if you floor the gas pedal to the mountains), see (but should not walk on) permafrost.

Worth the trip. Really.

He might need black shades for summer and be prepared to work like crazy, especially in summer months. Does get cold in winter.

Mosquitos are the state bird up there. ;> Itidarod training, confluence there of two major rivers, replete with salmon.

Fairbanks had legal brothels until the 1950s. Factoid of the day.
