Vanity: Kindle Vs. Nook (Any opinions?)

Posted on 06/28/2010 7:17:21 AM PDT by C19fan

I noticed there was a significant price cuts in the eReader market. The Kindle is now $189 while the WiFi only version of the Nook is $149. I am leaning towards the Nook because of it takes SD memory cards while the from what I understand Kindle does not. Of course, I could just keep waiting until the price drops even further. Some claim the price will go to $100 or less. Any opinions?

I am very happy with Kindle, although I am not sure if it wasn’t 12 months later that I wouldn’t just get an Ipad and use the book reader. With Kindle, though, the page is ‘eye-friendly’. It is supposed to closely mirror the feel of reading printed paper books.

Find out which one allows you to change the battery the cheapest. Last I heard the Kindle battery needs to be changed by Kindle and cost $100. Lasts about a year depending on use.

I’ve been using my Palm for reading eBooks for years. With the free eReader software, it’s a snap. Now I have a Blackberry Pearl and use the same software on it. But I still use the Palm because the screen is larger.

I looked at the Kindle and others. Regardless, the price is way too high, IMO, to simply buy books online and read them on a device. Evan a laptop (or any PC) will work with eBooks and eReader. Again, just my opinion...

Given the machinations of the bozos in Foggy Bottom, I’d stick with old-fashioned paper at this point.

Thanks for the advice. The Nook battery is user replaceable. A big plus.

I’ve used both and prefer the Nook. The big reason is because it uses epub format for books and not Amazon’s proprietary format. This allows you greater flexibility to side load books and “buy” from more sources.

Agree about the ipad.

You’ll give your kindle away once you use the ipad.

To add to my own post, I am using an iPad now which i prefer over both. The ipad also uses epub. However, if you are going to read outside, then you will need an e-ink device.

The Nook is $150 now for a wi-fi only version. Great deal.

I have the Kindle reader on my iPod touch. I'm pretty happy with it other than the small device size.

I think the stand alone reader is going to be a specialized dead end like a phone-only cell phone will be - sure, there will be some, but most will be far smarter devices.

The Nook is not backlit like the Kindle, so it is easier on the eyes over long periods. To me, it looks more like a book page.

The Nook also supports the format used by a lot of libraries to “eLend” books. Check out http://search.overdrive.com/ for your participating libraries.

I just picked up a nook yesterday. I liked the side-loading flexibility and the touch screen.

See if you can find a friend with a device you can try out.

I have tried reading from both LCD and digital paper devices. In my opinion, the digital paper is a little better but both seem to cause eye fatigue. I can see the advantages is storing books digitaly but the best of screens still lack something when compared to old fashioned ink and paper.

I have friends that love their Nooks, Kindals and iPads, you may also, but check it out before spending the money.

If you have laptop, why pay for a Kindle or Nook?

Longtime owner of a sony reader here till my daughter stepped on it, so I’m shopping around. I’ve handled the nook, the new Sonys and the kobo, but not the kindle.

My opinion of the nook is it’s a little more awkward to hold “naked” as opposed to the Sony or Kobo, and I’m concerned about the lcd screen as far as durability and battery life go. The price is spot on.

The kobo is great in the hands, but currently has some firmware issues they’re working on. If you don’t like the white, black is coming out soon. I feel it’s overpriced at $149. No wifi, but that is a plus as I’m leery of companies controlling my books (ala the Kindle 1984 fiasco). Price may drop at Christmas.

The new sonys: Very nicely designed, but coming from the 505, I find the 300’s screen a little small. Also think they should have put 2 gigs in there as opposed to 512mb as they took the sd card slot out. Very short sighted there, and overpriced at $169. The 600 is a good size, but clarity suffers from the touch screen a bit. Price is okay at $199. I’m expecting both these to drop in price by Christmas.

A good source of info is the comparison forum at www.mobileread.com. This website is also a fantastic resource for public domain books formatted for eReaders.
