I'm curious to what Freepers think of Aspartame. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener used in diet products like diet coke.
Many websites, albeit possibly kooky websites, say Aspartame produces side effects like anxiety, blurred vision, depression, etc. The medical establishment and Feds say its heavily tested and safe.
Anyone with an opinion or experience?
I quit using any artifical sweetner about 5 years ago. Figure after being diabetic for 35 years that I had already had too many chemicals in my diet. I only drink diet pop if we are out to eat prefering tea with nothing in it at home.
RE: Thanks for illustrating my my point so clearly.
Illustrating your point? Your point was that sales of Mountain Dew Light were evidence of the goodness of aspartame. Which is about as bright a deduction as a light with a broken filament.

What is the sweetener in Coke Zero?
Splenda is revolting. Try Stevia. But don't use too much, or it tastes bitter. You have to re-educate your taste buds, so that you can detect more subtle degrees of sweetness. I sometimes like to have a super sweet cup of coffee--like you might find in Mexico. So I add about 4 drops of Stevia and then about 2 tsp of sugar. It's a great combination.
48 years old been drinking diet coke for years. I’m in great health. I’ll go with science over opinions any day.

I drink my coffee with no additives.
I don’t even buy sugar or the fake stuff.
We have a running joke that I like my coffee the same way I like my men.
Hot, Strong, and RICH. :-)
Aspartame breaks down in the body to methanol, which is toxic. Aspartame is best avoided in favor of natural alternative sweeteners such as stevia, xylose, mannose, or agave.
Aspartame and Acesulfame potassium (brand name Sunett or Sweet One)
That light bulb thing is just clever is hell. You must work nights in clubs.
I said nothing of it's sales. I spoke of a clear tangible benefit of Aspartame, it's deliciousness in Diet Mtn Dew. Meanwhile, the other evidence around here seems to focus on third hand rumors of formaldehyde forming when left in the sun and other dark thoughts.
So we have a clear, tangible, life affirming, benefit, combined with third hand, unsubstantiated costs; sort of like everything in life worth pursuing. Sounds like evidence of "goodness" to me, no?
And I’ll be paying for your fat ass when you develop osteoporosis from failing to to take care of your own health, educating yourself about what you put in your body and consuming crap...all because you know uncle Obama will take care of you at the expense of others.
Methanol is a "normal" constituent of blood. It gets there because it is a breakdown product of various foods that we eat, like fruit juices.
The studies I have read have not found an increase in blood methanol after adults consume typical amounts of aspartame (e.g. the amount you would put in coffee, or drink in diet sodas).
So does every type of Alcohol you ingest.
One beer contains about 4000x more alcohol than a diet soda does, so if the trace amounts of formaldehyde created by the methanol in Aspartame causes damage, then drinking one beer should kill you instantly.
The are also many other bodily processes that create formaldehyde in greater quantities than Aspartame.
This formaldehyde BS is just more liberal food/health Nazi scare tactics
It turned me into a newt.
His dorm mate was confused. One of the breakdown products is methanol. It can be converted to formaldehyde. The amounts are too small to worry about.
There is methanol in stuff that no one thinks twice about eating.
It appears to be safe for some people, but not others. I get headaches whenever I drink anything with aspartame in it. I get a lot of headaches anyway, but drinking (or eating) any food with aspartame guarantees a headache.
So many things are hereditary that I discourage my children from using it, too.
