Good morning gardeners. Here in East Central Mississippi the weather has been typical for the middle of June and the official start of summer. Temperatures have been in the mid nineties in the afternoons and high sixties to low seventies overnight with afternoon showers every other day or so. My garden is thriving in this weather and doing very well. I have not had to do any extensive additional watering which is good.
Also this past week I noticed quite a few honey bees up in the garden. I hope they decide to visit often. In the past years my main pollinators have been bumblebees and they are all over the garden also. Things are a buzzing!
I hope all of your gardens are doing well.

Anyone have any suggestions regarding rain barrels?
The chipmunks got through the chicken wire fence and ate all the leaves off the squash plants I just put in. The plants seem to be alive. I sprayed them with Safer Soap hoping it will not taste good. Anyone know how to prevent chipmunks from eating the garden?
I have a big jar of cayenne pepper and will dust the opening to their tunnel liberally and see what happens.
That’s cute, but it could have turned tragic for that dog in an instant. Those sharp hooves could have split that dog’s head wide open. Or, perhaps Lab’s heads are too hard! LOL.
Good job, tubebender.
You fought the Cabernet, and the Cabernet lost!
Congrats on the first cherry tomato! Mine are still green.
I’m not sure about fall planting times.
I found a calendar that I have been keeping and looked ahead. I have a note every 2 weeks in August to plant lettuce. Something I read must have prompted me to write that. I looks like I take July off, and then start re-planting cool crops in August. First frost around here can come as early as the first week in October. I suppose that I treat spinach the same.
I don’t think I’ll ever have any zucchini. Germination has been dreadful, but I think I’ve been losing the seeds to birds. After the rain quit yesterday I found 2 seeds totally exposed lying on top of the mound. I pushed them back down, but I’ll have to plant more.
I have 2 yellow squash sprouted out of at least 15 planted. That’s enough, but it has been a surprise because those plants are supposed to be so easy to grow. Next year, I’m going to buy starts for some of these veggies at the garden store.
Picked the 2nd one today. My husband commented that they are not as sweet as last year, although they are supposed to be the same variety.
That’s beautiful!
Did you grow them in the same spot as last year?
I need more beds. My lettuce is holding up, but when I do harvest the last of it, I’ll have to leave that spot dormant until Aug., if I am to have any space to replant.
How deep are you planting the zucchini? I put mine a full inch down, and tried not to let them dry out, or get too wet. (I know, I know.)
;-)
The birds only messed with a few. I planted 9 seeds, and have 5 plants; more than enough.
Yes. I have 2 large cement urns at the entrance to my rose gardens. I took out the old planting mix and replaced it with new. The 2 tomatoes really may not be quite ripe because any hint of red causes me to pick ‘em in my excitement.
Some of my lettuce is trying to go to seed, but others are just fine. I just plan to rejuvenate the soil and replant in the same spot.
My zucchini said to cover it only with 1/4 in. of soil, so a good rain will expose those seeds if they are not rooted yet. I must be the only person in the world who can’t grow zucchini! :( I’ll bery the next seeds a little deeper.
bery=bury
Oops.
I'm the only one in my household who eats green beans, but I had a craving for some. Now I have 12 bean plants, with most starting to flower.....I'm going to have to learn how to freeze them, aren't I?
LOL, now THAT I understand.
LOL, hug...
Your Zucchini will grow this time. :-)
What? *gulp* This isn't your job?
I am too humbled to post on this thread.
OK, let's get series here and tell me how hugh your barrel is, will you collect runoff from your roof and will you dip from the barrel or is it large enough for a bung near the bottom to put a spigot in and connect a hose to?
However my pest control officer says you may want to look for this Guy
