Good morning gardeners. Here in East Central Mississippi the weather has been typical for the middle of June and the official start of summer. Temperatures have been in the mid nineties in the afternoons and high sixties to low seventies overnight with afternoon showers every other day or so. My garden is thriving in this weather and doing very well. I have not had to do any extensive additional watering which is good.

Also this past week I noticed quite a few honey bees up in the garden. I hope they decide to visit often. In the past years my main pollinators have been bumblebees and they are all over the garden also. Things are a buzzing!

I hope all of your gardens are doing well.

If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

If you have a question about gardening or just an observation to share please feel free to stop by and participate. There are no stupid questions, just honest ones.

I hope you find it. My store did not have any left the last time I was in there (two weeks ago).

Interesting: full moon and mosquitoes: ----------------------- Mosquitoes The OFF! Company sends these pointers about biting mosquitoes.

Bigger people are often more attractive to mosquitoes because these are larger targets, and they produce more mosquito attractants, namely CO2 and lactic acid.

Active or fidgety people also produce more CO2 and lactic acid.

Women are usually more attractive to mosquitoes than men because of the difference in hormones produced by the sexes.

Dark clothing attracts mosquitoes.

Some perfumes and other fragrances attract mosquitoes.

Movement increased mosquito biting up to 50% in some research tests.

Unkempt lawns and dense bushes are favorite resting sites for mosquitoes.

A full moon increased mosquito activity 500% in one study.

(OFF! Mosquito Bite Prevention Guide) -----------------

I may have to invest in a remote-controlled camera mounted on a toy four-wheeler for garden inspection... I've taken on at least 30 bites in the last couple days and I'm spraying myself shiny with OFF.

It may just be they are out up here as well... but at least I know what to look for on my to the city outings!

Btw... had fun on your about page... you have done what I am doing with the drip system. Only difference is I'm incorporating the system into the pvc trellis system I'm constructing as well!

I used to have some small acreage outside of Placerville! You would not believe how big that area has grown into! My Dad's plot around Diamond Springs is no longer "country"... Seems half of the Bay Area and Sacramento moved up that way...

How will the pvc trellis work with the drip system?

Gate valve on each end as you have done. The ground pvc is being used as the stabilizer for the trellis (along with some #2 wire as stake downs). Our plants seem to love an occasional shower from the trellis at night when I twist on the valve after a hot day!

I picked up 4 gallons of Glidden Gripper latex primer today after confirming your advice with a painting contractor I use for the Church upkeep and my son uses him for his business building. The new electric pressure washer did the job after the borrowed one blowed up real good.

I spread the last of the old compost bin on a bed my wife will plant to flowers she has left over. As the Redwood trees have grown taller the roots are getting into my bins and sucking up the nutrients so I have to empty them at least every 12 months now. I sure wish I had the stamina I had prior to this year as I am struggler to get projects done because the pop up faster and faster. I work with my son tomorrow morning and will watch the races in the evening.

My driver and I will skip Church Sunday for the annual home garden tour put on by the Humboldt Botanical Gardens foundation...Details Here

You are most welcome! If you log onto Samsclub.com and choose your local store, you can see whether or not your store carries the fabric and how much it costs. Good luck ... I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

This is a photo of my sweet corn patch. If you look closely, you can tell that the corn in the foreground is shorter than the corn behind it ... we planted at 10 day intervals so that it didn't all harvest at the same time. (I apologize that the corn is so far away, but I was trying to get as much of the field in the photo as I could) There are only 2 plantings here and we did 2 plantings in another field. The other field was the first to harvest and is already done and bushhogged, and the pumpkins are going in there.

I found our garden area to not have the greatest soil...so after a few frustrating years, I've gone mostly to beds...with lots of compost and peat moss to build up the soil....

but I also am using buckets this year....we live on 5 acres so its not a lack of space, its just that the deer are ferocious and you need a high fence to begin with...then there's the sandy soil....

in the buckets I've got a few peppers, a couple of squash and some cukes...

my garden despite the late start and the rainy cool conditions looks pretty darn good...in a few weeks, I'll submit some pics....

but I've got tomatoes, onions, brussel sprouts,beans,beets,kohlrabi( if they'll start growing),garlic,lettuce,basil,cilantro,ornemental corn,zucchini...

I'm using these plastic squares with the bottoms cut out to ring my plants, sort of make a seal in the ground....then putting some newspaper with peat moss on top....this makes a dam for the plant but also inhibits week growth...that's what I think is going to happen anyway....lol

"how many people remove non producing branches from your tomato plants"

I do....but I'm no expert...

once most of the blossums are set, or have little tomotoes,I'll break off a few non producing branches and I'll pull a few off every few days....hopefully, this sends the growth to the tomatoes that are coming on....

they always say that you want to grow wonderful tomatoes, not wonderful plants...

I'm very jealous of your place...you've done beautiful work.....

I'm planting still too.....we've had a very late season beginning so at this time of year, it'll be good sized seedlings....I think I need more regular cukes and peppers yet...
