I’ve been to China several times on business. The first time was in the mid 90’s and even then my opinion changed 180 degrees from the stereotype prevalent in the US. Each time I went back it was an eye opener. They had taken to capitalism with a vengeance. Nothing of the communist philosophy is evident. If I had to pigeon hole it, I would call it a nationalist, single party, somewhat benevolent dictatorship who have their country’s interest at heart more than our current regime has ours.

And they understand economics and capitalism better than our politicians.

I sure wish the likes of Rush and Hannity would spend some time there and get educated - for as much as I like them, they can sound real ignorant when they start talking about China.

My biggest pet peeve with Rush is his continued use of “ChiComs”.

An actual, objective view would realize they are actually the ChiCaps (Chinese Capitalists) and we’re the AmeriComs (American Communists).

As Rush likes to say, Words Mean Things. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get these right. I’m sure if he started making this distinction a large percentage of his listeners would immediately tune out, however...

Not if he went there and reported on what he saw.

Most people, especially Rush listeners, don’t need a boogeyman enemy, like China or Russia. They understand that our biggest enemy nowdays lies within.

Now you got me thinking... Who better to show Rush around China than an ex-pat who relocated to Shanghai on his own dime? A conservative who ran manufacturing plants in Belgium, Chile, and the US and now has moved to China - not for cheap labor - but freedom of economy?

And is a hard-core conservative/libertarian to boot (meaning I am with Rush on the small Government/low tax thing AND the gays-are-OK-with-me-and-Elton thing).

Hmmm... I think I’ll invite him over! Besides, a G550 would be a lot nicer than an A330 with 300 other people... LOL

I'd hate to see a derailment on #11.

Beautiful engineering. Of course, it's all fairly new. Most of our basic infrastructure is 50-100 years old, and looks it.

They are economically more free. They are passing on surpluses to their children. We pass on debts. The leadership is almost all engineers. We have lawyers. Their leadership takes care of China first. So far, their one party rule has done way better than our one party rule.

Union labor, government paper pushing waiting until retirement hacks, politically hooked up contractors. political interference, government EPA, government OSHA.

This is who is, was and will be ‘in charge’ of ‘rebuilding America’.

San Fran is a perfect example of what we’ve become. It’s been under construction for 4 years and is billions over budget. And it’s still not done. AND there will be nothing visually appealling about the thing. My how the mighty (USA) have fallen.

Kinda reminds me of that hole in the ground where the WTC used to be...

The higher the percentage of lefties, unions, government, the less gets done. Unless. Unless it is not wanted, is expensive, requires union maintenance, perpetual higher taxes, doesn’t do what it was suppose to, and the ‘green’ label can stick to it for a few years.

China enjoys cheap labor, which helps make this kind of construction possible.

Much of America's infrastructure was built between 1900 and 1965 at much lower labor costs and much less intrusive regulations than today.

Perhaps because Chinese students study engineering and American students study art history, women studies etc.
(Generalizing here).

How is it China can build a 36 km bridge for under $2 billion yet the Eastern span of the Bay Bridge, is what now $10 billion and costs estimated for replacing the Tappan Zee bridge is $6 billion; given how these projects get way underestimated in the US the real cost if it is ever done would be over $10 billion? Thanks for posting. China like those cable-stayed bridges, hee hee. Britain built world class infrastructure in the 19th century, the US was on top in the late 19th-firs half 20th centuries but China is on top now. We and the Brits would rather pour billions down rat holes and in supporting dead beats while China spends on things that will pay off for decades.

China’s structural engineers apparently are state-of-the-art.
