Doctors Replace Woman's Missing Thumb With Big Toe

Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Shannon Elliott’s life was changed in an instant last November when she was hit by an exploding M-80 firecracker that was thrown from a moving car. As a result, she lost a thumb and two fingers on her left hand, but a lot has changed in the months since that accident thanks to a very unique and rare surgery.

On June 7, surgeons at Stony Brook University Medical Center on Long Island, N.Y., amputated her big toe on her left foot and replaced her missing thumb. The 25-year-old from East Moriches, N.Y., said when doctors approached her about the procedure — she didn’t hesitate.

"I would rather lose a toe, and gain a whole hand," she told PIX 11 News, two weeks after undergoing the surgery.

I think I’d keep my big toes for better balance when running, etc.

So, she will no longer be giving two thumbs up ?

Does it make it more special if it is a one thumb and one toe thumb up?

George: ... She lost her thumbs in a tractor accident and they grafted her big toes on. They do it every day.

Jerry: You think she’s got toes for thumbs?

George: How’s her handshake? A little firm, isn’t it? Maybe a little too firm?

isn’t it interesting how God designed humans so that a toe could be interchangable with a thumb?

Thanks to people like you, I can no longer enjoy Transformers because I keep looking to get a glimpse of her thumbs throughout the movie. I can’t tell if that photo has been altered or not.

Someone threw a firecracker out of a car and it blew off her thumb?

Cough-cough (BULLSH*T!)

She just didn’t want to admit she was stupid (or drunk) and held a firecracker when it was lit.

I knew a man who lost his thumb somehow and it was replaced with his second toe. It looked a bit strange (extra joint) but it was 100% functional.

The Navy did this for an F-14 jock a few decades ago. He lost a thumb in an accident, and he successfully argued to the Navy that they spent a lot of money training him, and the transplant would be worth it to keep him on duty. And they did it, and he went back to flying status.

My son had his right fubula removed and shaped to become his left jaw bone. UCLA doctors told us that God made that bone just for this purpose.

:-)

His leg bone’s connected to his head bone.
Dem bones...
Dem dry bones!
