Toshiba has unveiled a new dual-screen, touch-screen mini laptop designed for surfing the internet, sending and receiving emails and keeping up to speed with social networking sites on the move.

The Libretto W100 runs Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system, and has two 7in, LED-backlit touch-screens. Toshiba says its compact size and clamshell form factor provides "unrivalled flexibility".

"One screen can be used for content creation, like Word documents or emails, while the other could be used to browse the web, social networks or multimedia programmes," said Toshiba, the company that invented the laptop 25 years ago. "Additionally, the device can also be used vertically thanks to an integrated accelerometer."

They have a video on at the link that shows the device.

I'm not big on these things but with the iPad selling like it did who knows what people will want to buy. Heck the Nintendo DS has dual screens and has been a huge success with the gaming market.

There’s a reason Microsoft “ended” the Courier project. Microsoft and Microsoft Research do a LOT of conceptual product development, even creating reference designs, that they then turn over to their partners (or develop at Microsoft’s cost for their partners).

THIS is the format for a portable device, not the big slate of the iPad. This folds, is self-protecting when folded, dual screens allow you greater flexibility in what you show/how you use it, and having one screen become a keyboard and the other remain a full-size display is absolutely correct.

I can’t wait to try a production unit out...

I agree 100%...

Too bad reports proce it at $1100. Way too high to compete with the Ipad. But more products will follow.

Yeah, price is killer; my guess is street prices (after the first few months) will be around $800, but if they can get that down to $500-$600 it’ll be a killer. Which should only take another 6-7 months at the rate 7” LCDs and 128 Gb FLASH chips are dropping in price.

I want one!
