1. after win 7 installed, each would work for awhile, then ie8, firefox, and chrome crashed.

freerepublic would work, and then "page not available."

2. clean install. same problem. works for awhile, then freerepublic not available.

thanks, ken

Are you losing the network connection, or does the system just quit?

I had a problem with my system forgetting the “route” to my router for internet access, but I could see the other XP computes in my home network.

If this seems to be your problem, maybe I can help you fix it.

FR had been having severe problems for a week or so. Even this morning, it takes forever to refresh.

See the following thread, especially about post #10 and down:

Add the IP to your hosts file.

I’m sorry then, my FRiend. Win7, while the best MS has produced since DOS is still early in it’s career and has a few bugs still.

What is the nature of your issue w/ it?

freerepublic.com resolves to two IP addys, 209.157.64.200 and 209.157.64.201. Your browser or DNS server is choosing between the reported available DNS addy's, ostensibly in order to participate in balancing the load on freerepublic.com.

However, freerepublic.com is only working at 209.157.64.200, so everytime your browser fires a request to 209.157.64.201, the report comes back "unavailable" or similar.

I resolved the issue here by putting 209.157.64.200 in my HOSTS file - but I really don't like doing that.

As was stated in other posts... Free Republic has been having some problems lately. You are not alone in blaming your own equipment when there is a malfunction from a completely external source. My father has called me a dozen times after he has taken some type of drastic action to fix a problem that had nothing to do with his computer.

Fortunately, a clean install will probably have other benefits even if it really was unnecessary.

I assume you are running some flavor of windows (I run linux here, mostly, but have to keep the kids' WinXP machines running too).

You are looking for a file called "hosts" ... see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file. From that Wiki page, I see that Win64 users may have issues editing the "hosts" file, but that certain tricks can be used to surmount this.

Once you find that file, and can edit it, you add an entry to associate an IP address with a domain name.

Here's another website that describes using the "hosts" file: http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/hosts.htm
