"A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the concerted efforts of a person or people to prevent an Internet site or service from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely."
Just asking... Plenty of articles on here lately like the gentleman who painted a sign on a truck in his cornfield, and someone who didn't like the message set it ablaze.
If someone would like to reduce the reach and effectiveness of FreeRepublic 20% in a day or two, why bother with laws and FCC internet control etc. Why not just crash the servers?
Thanks star....will check this tomorrow.
I should mention that a big "International effort" was made to shut down the Pirate Bay and get rid of their servers, but they keep moving them around and no one really knows where they are at right now ... LOL ...
It just "keeps right on going" no matter what -- so if you want a place that has defied being "shut down" on the Internet -- well.., Pirate Bay is definitely one of those sites, enduring the wrath of governments and big business -- both ... hoo-boy!
It's not going to work as a "board" -- so forget that. But, it will work to distribute videos and documents, and even entire websites to whomever wants to get the information. And so, if you want a way to be able to "always distribute your important information" to a certain group of people who may be "shut down" -- this would be it ... :-)
You have locks on your doors
Poor analogy since houses are still broken into and doors kicked open.
Have a nice day.
Can you please get a direct posting from Jim Robinson to say what he had said about the servers crahsing please, THANKS!
Here you go ... :-)

The main server crashed hard last night. John tried to bring it up on a different box, but was unsuccessful. He's trying again now. If it doesn't work, we may need to replace some hardware.
Sorry about the down time.
Jim
THANKS shoutout!
I wonder what off continent servers would cost?
While we did have WaPo and no Times, we did subscribe to CONTROV and POLITICS fidonet conferences wherein I learned I wasn't a liberal...the debates were hot and heavy, and nomex was needed in some flame wars...but reading the arguments back and forth is useful and valuable. Both voices need to be heard so people can think through just where they actually stand. For me, it was a true awakening....Fidonet did it. I loved it.
Maybe use the location function more to network with local FReepers....
I guess they were good teachers!

One of our primary servers crashed. We now have the main system running on a secondary server until John repairs or replaces the one that fried. We have several servers at FR all performing various functions. Each server has its own IP address so that’s why you may now be seeing a different IP. It was not a DOS attack. Nothing nefarious. Just a hardware crash. We usually have two servers serving web pages and two serving the database and others doing various tasks. Usually a server going off line wouldn’t crash the entire system but this time it did and John had a bit of a problem getting it all running again.
There was a period a year or so ago that we were under almost daily DOS attacks. John fought them off and eventually they went away. Seldom see a DOS attack now.
Yes, thank you. I have it bookmarked for the future, just hope I don’t have to use it.
The site came right up this time. Maybe I need a withdrawal plan in case this happens in the future????
What don’t I get? What am I missing here...
How safe is it to download from Pirate Bay? Any spyware or worse? How would freerepublic use it to communicate?
That’s great news!
I was responding to Post 71 which was also addressed to you so I included you in the response.
Thanks...this will help!
Here’s an address - when FR’s down, it gives the latest information:

I am replying to a post made early this morning over 12 hours ago, it was
“You were saying ...
Its time for FR to get hardened, and I mean whatever it takes.
Ummmm..., that could end up tripling or quadrupling the quarterly fund raisers. I dont think a lot of FReepers would go for that ...”
If FR needs more money then its still a small price indeed to pave the Freedom Highway.
Of which we all ride on.
Thank you! It came right up this morning, but I am book marking this address.
:)
