Ping to the Weekly Gardening Ping List.

I hope all of you will stop by.

This is typically a low volume ping list. Once a week for the thread and every once in a while for other FR threads posted that might be of interest.

If you would like to be added to or removed from the list please let me know by FreepMail or by posting to me.

Morning. We ate our first tomato, zuchinni and onions this week. I made a stack of them with local goat cheese and basil from the herb garden. Yum.

Tomatillos are about to riot. Peppers looking good.

But, my squashes keep dropping blossoms. They are still fairly young, but I got one zuke. Is something wrong?

Our tomato crop is overwhelming us so we had to give some away. We got a backlog on the dining room table.

I'm having to battle an invasion of leaf-footed bugs which is doing it's best to ruin our tomatoes.

The okra is producing well now - enough to fill a pot for myself every other evening.

Appreciated the green house plans from last week, After much research, the crosses that are available for the not recommended schedule 40 pvc, are not very available for schedule 80 pvc. Found a few for 30+ dollars each on the net. So, I had to change the plans to eliminate the crosses and just build the straight support with the metal conduit inside so it can fit under the bows and tied to them. Haven’t built it yet but working on it.

Speaking of gardening, yesterday I had to move all the potted tomatoes, to a protected area so the wind didn’t rip them out by the roots. This is already a second planting, first wiped out by hail. I expect it will be at least two to three weeks before the first blooms appear. Meanwhile the pepper plants which did survive the hail are almost recovered to the point my newly planted tomatoes are at now.

If this was Christmas I’d be tempted to spout some Dickens. Grocery stores may not be as good as home grown, but at least they sell ripe tomatoes and peppers.

Good morning R.D. 232

Beautiful day here in Missouri. We picked our first Cucumber yesterday. Lots on the vines, but only one was ready to pick. I am going to make it into refrigerator pickle and onions which I love on salad or as a side dish. Still no tomatoes. Lots of flowers on our melons.

Square foot garden is growing like gang busters. Lemon/Lime tree has a bunch of teeny tiny fruit forming. It was pretty anemic looking this winter, but after we got the T5 high output grow light, it perked up, and once we deemed it safe to go outside, it started doing even better.

We also got about 3 gallons of various lettuces, so we'll have some great salad for Father's day. When we get tired of salad, then I make salad soup. Many years ago, I was reading a book about the “Money Diet”.

The author made the point that there is usually a way to use everything. He gave the recipe for salad soup as an example. I tried it, and liked it.

Ingredients are basically broth, potatoes, salad, and seasonings. Start with a little olive oil to saute the garlic and onion. Use about 2 cups of broth for each potato, and a couple of hands full of lettuce.

Add whatever seasonings you like. I am fond of pepper and tarragon. When the potato is cooked, whirl it all in a blender till smooth. Add a little cream or fat free half and half, butter or butter buds. Garnish with grated cheese and bacon bits.

It even works well for whatever salad is left over (in the serving bowl-not your plate) with croutons, and salad dressing left on. I also sometimes us additional veggies like carrots, celery, and/or cauliflower. Any one else have a favorite recipe for using up lettuce, when you have too much on hand?

One of our Northern Kiwis appears to have died, but we don't know if it was the male or female, so we are waiting for the flowers to see which it is.

Everyone have a great weekend.

I picked my first sweet pea today! Ate it raw, with only 8 plants I doubt I’ll get enough to bother cooking, but boy do they taste good raw!!

My tomatoes are having issues. I had planted 6, only 3 sprouted and 2 of those died shortly after. So I replanted, and none of those sprouted. My indoor tomatoes have way too many vines but few flowers. So today I decided to balance things out. I took some cuttings of some of the vines that were escaping the trellis, and planted them in the outdoor garden. Had 1 more cutting than tomato spaces, so I filled a soda bottle with dirt and planted the cutting in that. Later I might hang it as a homemade topsy-turvy planter, but I want it to grow a few roots first.

I was supposed to be going out to the land yesterday, but I had to stay home and babysit Kitty instead, she swallowed 2-3 feet of yarn, whole! The vet couldn’t do much but said we had to watch closely for signs it was tangling in her gut, it could kill her if it catches wrong. So Kitty supervised my gardening today. She thinks putting dirt in a soda bottle is silly.
