Hitler’s mistake was also assuming that the Japs would have helped him against the Soviets in exchange for him declaring war on the US.

Not to say that inevitably we would not have gone to war with Germany, it was only a matter of time, but it might have been put off long enough for Hitler to inflict more damage on the Soviets.

Some of today’s posting points out how vital it was that Hitler not get his hands on the French fleet, which fortunately he did not. The French were not pleased with the results.

I really don’t get the feeling that he had an expectation that the Japanese would do that. I know he wanted them too, but both powers seemed secure in the thought that they had divided the world into two hemispheres and that the other would do what the needed to dominate their individual sphere. The only alliance during that war that I think was more disjointed was that between the western powers and the Soviets. As good as the Germans were at combined arms, they were not very good at combined strategic operations. The German 6th Army would be a primary victim of this failing.
