I am sensing THE CHICAGO WAY in action.
Recall Jerimiah Wright becomming intoxicated by the national attention and promising to pursue his ajenda during the last monhs of the Presidentail campaign - then - Wright is silenced by allegations of an illicit affair. Poof! Silence!!
Gore was not letting go of something the Chicago gang wanted him to let go of - maybe a self funded 2012 primary challenge. Who knows.
