HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Jonathan Metz had his left arm stuck in his furnace boiler for about 12 hours when he asked himself "what would MacGyver do?" and concluded that amputating the limb was his only chance for survival.

Wow! This guy really has been through it. Sad that neighbors don’t know each other anymore. Used to neighbors would pop in on each other every day. At least they knew each other well enough to know their routines and knew when something wasn’t right. Used to someone would have noticed the car in the drive and stopped in to see why that person hadn’t gone to work. People don’t care about each other anymore.

In the article it said the arm was already starting the putrefy, and the doctors said if he hadn’t taken it mostly off , it would have spread to his body and possibly killed him.

That strikes me unusual but if the doctors said that I have to go with them. There may have been some unusual circumstance that was causing the rapid progression.
