For much of the past week, the emigration of Texas and a band of Big 12 universities to the Pacific-10 Conference appeared inevitable. But a last-ditch effort by the Big 12 commissioner, Dan Beebe, to restructure the leagues television deal appears as if it may be enough to woo the Longhorns to stay in the league.
A Big 12 athletic director with direct knowledge of the negotiations said that Texas was on the cusp of agreeing to the new agreement to keep a 10-team Big 12 in place. Last week, Nebraska said it would join the Big Ten and Colorado said it would join the Pacific-10.
Things are trending in a favorable direction for the Big 12 today, the athletic director said. It looks like Texas is getting ready to commit to the Big 12.
Theyre going to make a long-term commitment and basically accept the Beebe television proposal.
The athletic director said an announcement could come as early as Monday afternoon.
It appears that an 11th-hour television deal is what could save the Big 12.

Will they be taking to train to games now Wilie?
Make that “the train.”
If i recall, when the SouthWest Conference was beginning to breakup with Arkansas going to the SEC, there was an 11th hour deal that kept the conference together, but it lasted only a year or two more.
No conference championship game, every one plays everyone else once.
I heard on the radio here that Texas, OU, and Texas Tech would be getting ~25 million a year, while the “other 7” would be getting ~17 million a year from TV contracts & the such.
the reason the old South Western Conference and now the Big 12 split up was/is making deals for Texas.
Texas brings in the money, Texas calls the shots.
So, the Big 10 will have 12 teams and the Big 12 will have 10?
Kind of ironic, eh? :-)
Nebraska will double their TV money in the Big 10.
I LOL’d!

I still miss the SouthWest Conference.
It is. I hope they work it out soon.
I took the train to Texas/OU at fair park and swear to god I could have walked there faster... with 2 broken legs.
No I think it’s TU, OU and aTm getting about $20 mill and the rest $12-$14. Tech has absolutely no leverage in this situation.
“bbbut, we were going to change the name of the Rose Bowl to the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium West”
I heard that it was going to be Mack Brown Field at The Darrell K. Royal Rose Bowl Stadium.
Why did the poster have to use a New Yawk Slimes link instead of Orangebloods? Regardless, after yesterday’s baseball debacle with the Frogs, the should probably steer clear of the Mountain West, especially with the addition of Boise State.
In spite of all of that - in the last year, Football #2, Baseball #2, Volleyball #2 and #1 in a couple of lesser sports. No university in the country can compare athletically across the realm.
If they’re gonna stay in the Big 12, maybe they should go after the Hogs, Tigers, Frogs, and/or the blue football field. What would happen if they decided to stay in B 12 and the Aggies, Sooners, Cowboys, and Raiders made a hasty departure, leaving them high and dry.
Prediction - Pac16; if UT goes, the Aggies will fold their SEC tent.
Debacle is right, I was there, anyway, If the Ags, Sooners and the rest decide to split I see us going independent
As an OU fan it pains me to say it, but... you’re right.
As a Texas fan, I suspect OU could wrangle up some pretty good television contracts on their own. OU has options, they realize though that Texas and Oklahoma together are a huge package.
