Rush Limbaugh and Kathryn Rogers: Why Elton John Played Their Wedding

JUNE 8, 2010 Rush Limbaugh and Kathryn Rogers: Why Elton John Played Their Wedding

By Zev Chafets

A lot of people were unpleasantly surprised to learn that Elton John, one of the world’s most proudly prominent gay entertainers, played at Rush Limbaugh’s Palm Beach wedding to Kathryn Rogers last Saturday night. Evangelicals voiced dismay that a pious fellow like Rush would give legitimacy to the libertine Sir Elton. Limbaugh-haters jeered at what they considered el Rushbo’s hypocracy.

This demonstrates that even after more than twenty years on the radio, not everyone understands who Limbaugh actually is.

For starters he is not, and has never pretended to be, a member of the Christian Right. As a young disc jockey he invented a fictitious faith healer, “Friar Shuck” who saved people over the radio for a hundred bucks a pop. Shuck is gone now, but Rush’s show still has a rakish, sometimes impious edge. His fans know he was an Oxycontin addict who spent time in rehab, that he unapologetically appreciates “adult beverages” and beautiful women and that his Sunday devotionals take place in the Church of the NFL. As his good friend Roger Ailes once told me, Rush lives the way Jackie Gleason would have lived if Gleason had been rich enough.

On some social issues, like abortion, Limbaugh is a conventional conservative. On others he sounds a lot like Barack Obama. In an interview last summer he told me that he regards homosexuality as most likely determined by biology, considers other people’s sex lives to be none of his business and supports gay civil unions. I’m pretty sure that Elton John’s sexual orientation never even crossed Limbaugh’s mind.

Klara and Edda belly-dancing, by Nan Goldin, shows two young girls playing together in front of a kitchen sink. One is skimpily dressed, the other is naked and lies beneath her, knees bent and legs splayed towards the camera. The image was seized by police from the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead last Thursday.

Ditto. And Elton is an incredible performer. I first saw him (after years since 1976 trying to get to a concert) in 1994 or 95 when he did a one man show, with a scratchy voice, at the Grand Ol Opry to help raise money for his band member, Dee Murray (or the other blonde haired guitar player) that died of cancer.

It was awesome.

On some social issues... (On others) he sounds a lot like Barack Obama.

Name them.

If I could afford it, I’d have U2 over for a little private concert.

I don’t care what Bono’s politics are...to me it is the greatest band ever! :-)

In an interview last summer he told me that he regards homosexuality as most likely determined by biology, considers other people’s sex lives to be none of his business and supports gay civil unions.

Rush is also aware enough of the public opposition from coast to coast (including a plurality in California) to same sex marriage under law.

The people of the land determine the laws. It becomes tyranny when the legislators act in spite of the attitudes of the public. Persuading the masses hasn't come.

A social issue like this cannot be rammed through the courts and accepted by the people. It HAS to come through universal consensus, which at this time does not exist.

He has never gone on air and said "come on people, it's time to let this one go".

Even former hard left liberal Michael Medved points out that the public overwhelming opposes this.

I also want to say that I saw no "hypocrisy" in Rush hiring Elton John nor any "scandal" in doing so.

Some pointed out some similar scandal with George Bush I think. Bush was reportedly in the White House. Rush is using private funds if that makes any difference.

As offensive as Serano's Piss Christ art offense was to Christians, it was doubly offensive because it was funded by thousands of US taxpayer funding at a time we are told that the State cannot fund ANY representation of religion.

So they can piss on my shoes and tell me it is a summer shower but I can't see a memorial cross to our war dead that is privately financed on public (or formerly public) lands.

If I limited my entertainment choices to people whom I agree with politically, there wouldn’t be much tv or music I could enjoy. How sad for our society to limit us to only certain performers.

The Lavender Mafia and Hollywood Reds routinely do this.

A pinklist exists against conservatives in Hollywood.

Legends like Lionel Hampton and Bob Hope are reviled by the Left because of which party they campaigned for over the years. And NOT A ONE OF THEM ever supported the enemy in wartime or posed on an antiaircraft cannon and pretended to shoot down our own troops.

So where do you stand on the Safe School Czar’s agenda then?

Safe Schools Czar Kevin Jennings Favorite Book for Teens Too Lewd for Seattle Times

What about http://www.positive.org just say yes (to teen sex) stance?
We have a quick and easy online tour through the most important topics for teens who are sexually active now or just thinking about having sex. It’s called “Just Say Yes” (en español: “¡Di Que Sí!”) because we’re tired of people telling us what we can and can’t do. There’s no preaching. No moralizing. Just the facts.

“It’s simply that I see the purpose of government to be the protection of rights.”

Protection of rights, common defense. . .

we find as three-legged conservatives that the rights of vulnerable people are denied through social vices such as porn, public sexuality, drug abuse, etc.

It is easier to pretend that it is not so, but history and even our everyday lives show us otherwise, repeatedly.

If you don’t want the government manipulating culture for your preference, you may ask yourself, as I like to ask libertarian friends, should we be allowed to go nude in public? Wander as lunatics? Put pornographic statues on our front lawns? Verbally advocate the murder of others? Put on paid suicide shows and kill ourselves while others watch? Have a suicide encouragement hotline adults could call when they need someone to talk them into it? I would assume you’d say no, at least I hope so, and that is manipulating culture, too.

It all depends on how much manipulation you are comfortable with.

Social conservatives defend traditional (biblical) marriage as the ONLY blueprint for proper child rearing and development. Most of our positions stem from that. That’s why we tend to oppose easy divorce, redefinition of marriage, fornication, adultery, porn, drug abuse, etc. People can not grow up properly in a family/culture rife with that stuff. And it is not fair to them.

We joke about everyone saying “it’s for the children,” but sometimes, it really is.

Social conservatism” - I don’t care for the same reason I don’t care for liberals - they want to use government as a tool for manipulating culture to their preference.

Rejection of homosexuality is thousands of years old. "manipulatig culture to their preference"

THIS is only a slippery slope in one direction.

I imagine Rush invited him, because Rush likes his music.

or his new wife does. This is pretty much about some people REALLY needing to bitch about something 24/7

Yep, I totally agree. I turned off Savage last night for this reason. With everythign that is going on on this earth, he is gonna piss and moan about somebody hiring a musician?!

I mean if I quit listening to every single musician that was on the left, my playlist would be very small, and I’m not about to put country music on it. However, there are some who went too far and got crossed off the list, but their music sucking was probably also a factor.

Such as Pearljam for example. They are as left as they can be, and they talk about it all the time. They used to be very good some time ago(for a grunge band), now they are just god awful, and I don’t listen to them.

I go back even further...1988. Haven't listened to Rush in about 3 years, though, because I got Sirius satellite radio and he isn't on it.

But I know what Rush is all about, and I've always been amused when the left portrayed him as part of the so-called “Religious Right.”

Rush is very conservative, but he's a pretty old-fashioned Barry Goldwater type. Or a Bill Buckley type. Yes, I know all about God and Man at Yale...but Buckley was essentially a libertarian, albeit a conservative-leaning libertarian.

If you look at the Conservative movement using the old 3-legs-of-the-stool model (laissez-faire economics, national security, and traditional family values), I'd call Rush a 2 1/2’er. As, probably, am I.

Rush isn't so much a Family Values guy as he is an anti-anti-Family Values guy. That is, he'll readily mock those who mock traditional values....but he's NEVER held himself up as a paragon of such values.

Hank
