Rush Limbaugh and Kathryn Rogers: Why Elton John Played Their Wedding

JUNE 8, 2010 Rush Limbaugh and Kathryn Rogers: Why Elton John Played Their Wedding

By Zev Chafets

A lot of people were unpleasantly surprised to learn that Elton John, one of the world’s most proudly prominent gay entertainers, played at Rush Limbaugh’s Palm Beach wedding to Kathryn Rogers last Saturday night. Evangelicals voiced dismay that a pious fellow like Rush would give legitimacy to the libertine Sir Elton. Limbaugh-haters jeered at what they considered el Rushbo’s hypocracy.

This demonstrates that even after more than twenty years on the radio, not everyone understands who Limbaugh actually is.

For starters he is not, and has never pretended to be, a member of the Christian Right. As a young disc jockey he invented a fictitious faith healer, “Friar Shuck” who saved people over the radio for a hundred bucks a pop. Shuck is gone now, but Rush’s show still has a rakish, sometimes impious edge. His fans know he was an Oxycontin addict who spent time in rehab, that he unapologetically appreciates “adult beverages” and beautiful women and that his Sunday devotionals take place in the Church of the NFL. As his good friend Roger Ailes once told me, Rush lives the way Jackie Gleason would have lived if Gleason had been rich enough.

On some social issues, like abortion, Limbaugh is a conventional conservative. On others he sounds a lot like Barack Obama. In an interview last summer he told me that he regards homosexuality as most likely determined by biology, considers other people’s sex lives to be none of his business and supports gay civil unions. I’m pretty sure that Elton John’s sexual orientation never even crossed Limbaugh’s mind.

When Rush started at KFBK in Sacramento, he was poor. His car broke down and he had to WALK to work. Everyone made fun of him —this elevated their image in the minds of their liberal media peers. He’d been fired a whole bunch of times, controlled by stupid station PD’s and their foolish ideas about how to gain listeners.

Still he was nice to ALL. He took life’s vinegar and returned it as wine.

He started Rush to Excellence in order to make a little money —even after he started to be worshipped his contract still sucked so he wasn’t rolling in dough by any means.

He drove to Tahoe (high in the nearby mountains) for fun in his battered car, and it nearly overheated about a million times.

His family was mad at him and worried about him —he was thought of as the blow it case for many years.

Now he’s 1,000x bigger than all of them put 2gether (although he doesn’t fly a P51 mustang, strangely).

Rush is polite to all —Rush is the alpha and omega of the conservative movement.

Rush could show up in buttless chaps with the Village People and I’d rush off to Dave’s Bake Sale II with a pan of for-sale brownies a hearbeat.

You’re kidding, right?

I AM a “member” of the Christian Right (as if we HAVE membership cards or something). And yet, I respect Elton John as an individual, and I respect his consderable talent as an entertainer. I would imagine Rush Limbaugh feels the same...

Does that mean I would “agree” with Elton and his guy-pal having a civil union or being “married?” NO. So — we differ. We disagree. I still like his music.

*Sigh...WHy isn’t that enough for some people?!

I KNOW that Rush Limbaugh can spend any money he wants on anything he wants, but just don't let him preach to me the peasant about supporting conservative or republican candidates...with a cool million he could have helped many good candidates around the country...

its the waste of money that I hate to see when it could have been used for so much good....

Mark Levin attended the Wedding and he commented on Elton John entertaining at the Reception.

Apparently, Elton was at the same Hotel in Hawaii when Rush had his heart issue. Elton heard about it and contacted Rush to see how he was doing.
Rush and Kathryn heard about Elton's concern and called him to thank him. Since then, they have been in contact with Elton and asked him if hew would perform at the Wedding. As Mark said, Elton took time during his performance to tell the guests that he was there because he valued building relationships, not tearing them down.
Mark said Elton was great and he enjoyed meeting him, as did many other guests. It was a celebration of family and friends and everyone including Elton had a great time.

One time as his popularity was taking off a big radio exec up in the Sacramento foothills invited Rush to a dinner party at his palatial home.

Rush wasn’t going to go, as he thought he would be out-of-place as the sole conservative, but later he broke down and went.

The minute after he sad down the guy stopped everything and started telling Rush how incredibly stupid his idea for a conservative political talk-show on AM radio was, with no guests, no less (remember, this was after word was getting around, with the lines jammed and people driving from miles around liberal California to catch a glimpse Of Him).

Rush didn’t get visibly mad, but this big-shot continued in this manner quite unreservedly.

He went on and on for the ENTIRE DINNER about how stupid Rush’s idea was (last year the NFL also did this to him, although not quite so deliberately perhaps).

Rush was totally cool, and these others were total jerks to him.

The great thing is, if you heard their names YOU WOULDN’T RECOGNIZE ANY OF THEM AND YOU NEVER WILL.

They also don’t own an immense house or a couple of jets, either.

It’s funny all of the liberal head that are exploding over this? They completely misunderstand us.

Exactly! The libs have carefully constructed a caricature of what a conservative is, the MSM has played it up, and it just become accepted as fact. My SIL is gay, has a long-term partner, and we love them both.

It’s simply that I see the purpose of government to be the protection of rights.

“Social conservatism” - I don’t care for the same reason I don’t care for liberals - they want to use government as a tool for manipulating culture to their preference. Both claim “for the children”, “for the greater good”, and that society has rights.

“Strong Defense and Foreign Policy” - For sure.

“limited government with low taxation” - has my vote :)

I’m a libertarian which, as Ronald said, “is the heart and soul of conservatism.”

I wonder if Rush is on the list for the new G650?

It's a completely new Airframe with a much larger interior.

Camille Paglia --well known lesbo intellectual, and major liberal chops.

They invited Rush to one of their stupid dinners, and deliberately sat Rush next to her, just to enjoy some fireworks.

See, they have Rush figured out soooooooo well that this guy would get homophobic or begin tongue-lashing her, right? Cuz he's so intolerant.

And they this seated pair began chatting, and all others soon were peering slyly to see the emerging fight.

WHICH DIDN'T HAPPEN.

Nope..! Now they're GOOD FRIENDS..!!! She has repeatedly singled him out for high praise.

See? Rush has his beliefs, and HE IS COOL TO FOLKS.

And it's going to KEEP GOING LIKE THIS.

And as we enter this Era of the Long-Tailed Dragon, his enemies are going to start folding and dying off, faster and faster.

So they are friends.Nice of Elton to call. For the record I think Elton should be judged by his favorite art which was under consideration for child porn when on display.A little girl with her legs spread wide with no underpants on.

"If I limited my entertainment choices to people whom I agree with politically, there wouldn’t be much tv or music I could enjoy."

I'm sure I enjoy being entertained by a lot of people I don't agree with politically. That said, I do have a limit. I don't like getting a constant dose of left-wing political nonsense all the time. There have been some music groups whose albums I have quit buying and actors, actresses, and directors whose movies I will not watch.

Considering Elton is Gay, that's an interesting choice of Art for him. I never heard about that.
