Yahoo Music ^ | Jun 7, 2010 | by Wendy Geller

Music-industry bible Billboard took the opportunity this week to comb through its chart records and compile the top 25 Country artists of the past 25 years--and who do you think is topping the list? Nope, it's not Garth Brooks, who I would say is a more than reasonable guess. However, Garth landed at No. 2, falling short only to George Strait.

Martina McBride has the best voice of anyone singing in America today. I love her album of old country hits, Timeless, especially Buddy Holly’s “True Love Ways” and Johnny Cash’s “I still miss someone.”
Check her out with the Chieftains on “I’ll be all smiles tonight.”

Junior Brown is in a league entirely of his own.

Amen. And, the ASCAP writer’s strike of the early ‘40s is why American troops in WWII got a steady diet of (BMI-published) country music. The strike basically made songs like San Antonio Rose, Cool Water and Cowboy’s Sweetheart constantly played hits for a decade.

>>did you give Raising Sand a couple of solid listenings?

Never heard of Raising Sand. Did you reply to the right message?

Love, love, love Patsy Cline! Heard some DJ's saying she could never make it in today's market because she didn't have "the look".

Looking at Shania Twain (who has a awful voice, imo) Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood, etc. they kinda have a point. Not any unattractive country singers that I can think of.

Junior Brown can flat out play.

There are not a lot of people on the planet earth that can sing and play a lap steel (guit-steel) at the same time. And he’s not just playing vibrato when he is singing, he’s playing licks.

Martina is great. Darn near as good as Alison Krauss. :)

That’s the name of the cd on which Robert Plant and Alison Krauss collaborated. I think you sort of answered my question, though.

George Strait was the top bill when Cowboys Stadium opened last June 6th. I couldn’t think of a better way to open the place than with a native Texan. That is one of the things Jerry Jones did right, asking GS if he’d do the honors.

BTW, George is a big Cowboys fan.

Gretchen Wilson comes to mind. Rode hard and put away wet.

Feet to the fire, Garth will tell you he’s a direct rip-off of the late, great Chris LeDoux.

lol! Had to Google her. In some pictures she looks very pretty, but in others... a little rough around the edges.

One of the good things about being a country fan in New Jersey is that you get to see country acts in smaller venues.

About ten years ago, I got to see Junior Brown in a small bar in Hoboken, called Maxwells.

The back room, where the musicians play, is just a small empty room with a little stage up front. There isn't even a stage door, so the whole band has to push through the crowd to get up there.

My friends and I stood in the front row center. I got to watch Junior play for about two hours, with my nose about a foot from his hands. It was mesmerizing. He kicks some serious ass on that guit-steel.

We were standing next to some guy who didn't know Junior's music, but was a professional guitarist and was there because he heard people talk about Junior's guitar genius. He was drop-jawed, shaking his head in disbelief, for the whole show. Afterwards, he said he saw things in his playing that he didn't even think were possible.

What’s Strait got now something like 56 No. 1 hits? He’s done his thing his way and people still like his music. On May 1, 2010 he set a new attendance record at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio of 55,000 which broke the concert record he set of 47,000 back in the late 90s.

Strait also has the premier Team Roping event in the nation each spring. This past March some 469 teams signed up paying a $1,000 per team to compete in the 28th annual event.

Also LOL. Let me guess, the photos in which you thought she looked pretty were taken from a distance.

There is a young lady like that at my job. As Mark Knopfler sang “closeups can be rough”. (Wild West End)

Junior was just at the Ram’s Head in Annapolis MD a few weeks back. On a flippin’ Wednesday night. Annapolis is over an hour away, and I just could not swing it on a work night.

Or maybe Vaseline smeared on the lens.
