FReeper needs help on how to get permission to display book images in newsletter.

Posted on 06/08/2010 11:28:19 AM PDT by erod

Hi FRiends, My boss and I are writing a newsletter and one of the features of the newsletter is a book review section. I thought it would be cool if we could use the book cover images for a graphic, but my boss said that may be copyright infringement. From doing research I am comming to the conclusion that he is probably right, but does anyone know how I can go get the permission to use these images in a newsletter? Any help would be awesome, Thanks, -Eric

Ask the publisher.

Specifically for critique or review you should be allowed to under fair use. To be safe however, get the images directly from the publisher or author’s media relations site.

Amazon does it. Probably part of the contract you sign with them when you agree to sell your book on their website though.
Maybe you could use the Amazon website picture with a link?

If it’s an “online newsletter” — just “hotlink” to the bookcover from the publisher, or some other bookseller. They use the bookcovers all the time for selling the book.

You hot-link it and it’s not your graphic but the graphic from the bookseller themselves or the publisher themselves ... :-)

An example ...

Star is very probably correct. Use it and if requested take it down. If you want to be absolutely clear, contact the publisher. They can either give you permission or tell you how to buy a license.

I made a video and used a copyrighted song. To get permission, I contacted the publishing company and they were very happy to sell me a license.

They like money.

Permission granted to use this one:

And it’s a really cool cover, too.

Put the cover in. Provide the reader information where they can purchase the book.

On the remote chance that a publisher writes to say they do not want you using the image of the book cover, say you won’t do it again...then proceed to write really bad reviews of that publishers books.

My view, don’t worry about it.

Sure I thought about that and while Amazon doesn’t care they say that you need to contact the publisher to get permission because it is copyrighted, good thought though.

Doing that as well, but I work with photoshop and got some cool ideas. Thanks for the tip though.

I would make that call if I was releasing the newsletter, but since it’s my boss I can’t do that. :-/
