The mysterious russian shortwave radio "UWB-76", also known as "The Buzzer"... ...just stopped transmission. This is huge, considering there has been almost NO interruption since 1982. It even survived the cold war. This is.............. odd..................

He was a forward artillary observer during WW2 and knew the insides and outsides of just about any radio we ever had.
LOL! No, not quite. The Turboencabulator is only needed if the groundpoise cannot sync-up correctly with the magnatic declination of that particular location.
The Turboencabulator takes the ouput from the goniometer amplifies it so that:
Ap = 10 log10(Ps/Pd)
and then attenuates it so that the R-390 can correctly interpret the analog-digital-analog loopback circuitry.
It’s a pain in the ass when you’re being fired at.
Okay. Never mind. :-)
No comprende. It's a riddle! ;)
Vy cool DF set. W/R-390, no less.
My EE department built the first Wullenweber in the Americas, out of a dismantled installation from Germany.
I never visited the array (long since torn down), but I did see a goniometer in our machine shop. As I recall, it was a cube about 2 feet on an edge, with a big knob and compass rose on the top, and a jillion coax connectors around the sides.
The EE department got to maintain the array and to use it for various purposes; but when the Navy came in to use it, they kicked all the EE guys out. Not enough clearance, I guess.
A friend and I were trying to figure out which site you have in the picture. You can look at the present status of all the flr-9’s at this location.

LOL! Now THAT is funny!
Not sure what site it could be from. Elmendorf? Augsburg many years ago? Maybe it's a very good artist rendering.
Oh hey! Thanks for the link itself. Very cool!
Did an active station really broadcast this or are you yanking our chain, Slim? Because, ya, there really was some hilarious stuff that went on. :-)
I knew what Slim was saying. Trust me, he’s yankin’ yer chain. ;)
I figured as much. :-)
The yellow bird is on the credenza, I repeat, the yellow bird is on the credenza ...
Who me?
I want to say I was still using R-390s at least till the mid-80s. Heck, you can probably find them in use today in some gov't backwater.
And I think we even had to adjust that goniometer for the AN/TRD-4 when setting up the antenna array. Long time now though :-)
