The mysterious russian shortwave radio "UWB-76", also known as "The Buzzer"... ...just stopped transmission. This is huge, considering there has been almost NO interruption since 1982. It even survived the cold war. This is.............. odd..................

Buzzer not Woodpecker. And it is indeed odd that it’s stopped..

If only you knew my background...Anyway I do know the difference and we're just having fun.

My analyst background is saying that it either has been shut off or broken. If it was a Spy communication network it could be easily replaced by the Internet. If it was used for Military Communications, a closed fiber optics network would be the logical alternative which are more secure and EMP proof...

The buzz is most likely a beacon used to home in ground based Satcom antennas. It would make sense to use short wave (HF) frequencies since they are pretty much immune to background radiation from a nuclear exchange.

I have Degrees in Electronics, and Communication Technology as well spending 10 years as an intelligence analyst.

Yes, it does :-)

Google maps still shows the one in Augsburg but I think it is torn down now.

I always thought UVB-76 had something to do with Soviet Civil Defense.

“Pitcher tubes ...”

These were often used in push-pull arrangement with catcher tubes.

Supporting circuitry (AFC, sync, AGC etc.) was often designed using coach tubes, first baseman tubes and umpire tubes.

Less common were outfielder tubes used for tuned RF amps.

“I have not heard it in a long time”

Me neither. It used to raise havoc on the ten meter ham radio band. I did see a large antenna array near Pripyat/Cnernobyl area. It has been shut down since the accident. I found it using google earth.

Don't forget the Left Field Tubes for Government controlled news and Right field tubes for fix tuning of Rush, Sean and Mark...

Consider the possibility that the transmitter operator’s son is a guitarist for a Russian grunge band and cannibalized the transmitter tubes for his amp.

Following that line I should have said that “outfielder tubes” were often used for tuning in Art Bell.

I remember the Russian Woodpecker, it interfered with CB and Ham radio back in the 80s.
