Friday, one of the most expensive homes in America officially went on the market for $68 million.
It's taken more than two years to build, and it's just eight miles outside of Manhattan, in Alpine, New Jersey.
It's called the Stone Mansion 30,000 square feet of home sitting on two acres of land. Richard Kurtz is the owner, and he started building the home for just himself and his wife but the plans kept getting bigger and bigger.

And it’s New Jersey! Uggghhh!!1 /s
It’s not a home. It’s a museum.
Alpine N.J. is pretty much unlike the rest of the state. More like Beverly Hills, except for the weather.
68 million? That’s insane.
Yeah, and for 68 mil, I would expect at least 15 - 20 acres.
Man, I would be satisfied with a one million dollar home!
We probably lost 200 grand in equity in our home since zero took office, losing, not gaining, but at least we’ve still got our necks above water, and a house.
Hey, I thought zero was gonna “spread the wealth”?
Maybe I’ll take a drive over there in Alpine and claim my share!
Yeah, Can’t imagine what it costs to just heat the place.
Yes, daahling, only 2 acres means no room for the stables, coach house w/living quarters, and tennis court. What WAS he thinking??
And where does the Ceeement pond go?
The other baffling thing is, why would he customize it with an indoor BB court, then put it up for sale? I’ll bet the grandkids are pi$$ed!
I have no idea, makes no sense to me.
I wonder what it cost to build versus the selling price.
What about taxes? I don’t even want to know.
Selling that sort of monument to self in this environment is a curiosity. It’s tempting to assume he can’t afford it any longer. Taxes, insurance, upkeep, etcetera. Then again, maybe he’s the flighty sort who drops $68 million on a whim. Or, he sees a very unfavorable situation going forward, owns it outright and wants to cash out what he can, while he can.
Maybe that’s why it’s for sale.
I wonder how many illegal it takes to keep the place clean?!
What’ no golf course!
Imagine just keeping it dusted! Or where you laid your car keys.
One interesting thing I learned about really high dollar houses is, the people that can afford them, can build their OWN dream house and don’t need to buy someone else’s. And they have more control over the location. It makes them REALLY hard to sell.
Obama is going to spread the wealth Frenchtown Dan but you are confused because you are one of the ones he is spreading it FROM, not TO.
Good question.
In the general housing market, it costs about $45 to $70 per square foot to build (on average). Now you see where it became insane that in places like California and Florida, places were going for $550 per square foot during the housing "boom."
Ask Algore. He’ll know.
