A Christian news site is making headlines by claiming Ellen DeGeneres is responsible for the ratings erosion of Fox's "American Idol."
Christian Newswire director Gary McCullough says the sexual orientation of the newest "Idol" judge was the reason "Idol" ratings were down about 9% this season.
McCullough said he predicted that "Idol" ratings would drop after DeGeneres was announced as a judge and says Fox has paid the price:
"At this moment in entertainment history, network television is on a pro-homosexuality bender," McCullough wrote. "The producers of 'American Idol' chose to be a part of this push; it was a huge mistake. The consequences of this choice were a drop in market share and a reduction in advertising dollars ... it actually drives away a significant market share of parents and teens who used to watch the show together, until mom and dad decided that the subtle promotion of an 'alternate lifestyle' to their kids was not worth the entertainment trade off."
"Perhaps next we will see the pro-pedophilia group NAMBLA use its influence in Hollywood to have 'Dancing with the Stars' seat Roman Polanski as a judge," he added.
Few points:
To claim that DeGeneres is detrimental to TV ratings conflicts with the reason she was chosen for the show -- her established popularity with TV viewers via her daytime talk show and other outlets.
"Idol" ratings have been dipping steadily for the past few years. This season's "Idol" ratings drop was about the same as the previous year, when DeGeneres wasn't on the show, and were in line with network performance expectations at the start of the season.
The biggest new scripted ratings hit of the season is one of the most gay-friendly broadcast shows ever created -- Fox's "Glee," whose ratings increased after an early pivotal episode focused on a gay character.
"I can hear the bloggers loading their homophobe-blasters, but think this through with me," McCullough wrote. "If one of the judges was an abortion activist, or a political right winger -- and continued to insert comments in line with their activism -- the same criticism would be true, and the show would suffer. The advice, 'Shut up and sing!' comes to mind."
I’ve actually never seen an entire episode, just bits and pieces while channel surfing.
Is the show really as bad as it looks? And what music background does Ellen have? Aren’t the judges suppose to be in the music business?
I sure did not care for Ellen on the show. What does she know to say, “you look good,”
They need a good judge that has a brain & use it .
Dioguardi is credible (and hot).
Ellen had no cred and is a butch les.
With Cowell leaving, I give them one more season and poof.
I, for one, will never watch anything that knowingly showcases a faggot. Then again, I don’t have tv so it’s a moot point.
Defund the Left:
Turn off the TV.
Oh right. It can’t possibly be because she’s a no-talent yahoo.
BTW, the few times I laughed out loud this year watching the show, were because of Ellens one liners. I agree that musically she added nothing to the show, but she could be entertaining.
Flashfoward's ratings fell because although the premise of the show was fascinating, the acting and scripts sucked.
I so wanted to watch the show, but every week I found myself waiting for the end. I could have loved the show, but it was too badly scripted.
“Flashfoward’s ratings fell because although the premise of the show was fascinating, the acting and scripts sucked.”
Bingo. Too much “up close and personal” character development and not enough plot. That is a common problem with many TV dramas and Sci-Fi shows.
They even do it with the Olympics.
Definitely! It wasn't as bad as the beat box season (I get stabby just thinking about it), but it was up there. It's been downhill since season 5.
Someone could truly make a great story out of the plot, but the current show was a flop.
Frankly, it’s just nonsense to say that Ellen had anything to do with the audience drop. Like every other show in tv history, there comes a time when the show itself peaks and then declines; people just stop watching. If I had to pinpoint the ‘peak,’ I’d say it was the year Carrie Underwood won. None of the winners since has had quite the same sense of inevitability of winning, or star power. It’s hard to keep what is basically a talent search show ‘fresh.’ With Simon leaving next year, I’d say it will be American Idol’s last.
As to Ellen: Friends and I were recently discussing Ellen’s changes over the years - from coming out, to being an ‘in your face’ lesbian, to seemingly becoming more comfortable with who/what she is. As she’s had less need to shove it in everyone’s face, she’s become funny again.
Yeah, we're all just a bunch of "hateful bigots."
What stupid point. This point assumes the same audience that watches Degenerate's talk show are the same ones watching Idol.
American Idol has been one of the few shows that could considered family oriented and one that didn't alienate those with religious beliefs.
There is no doubt replacing Paula Abdul with someone utterly unqualified for what appeared to be politically-correct purposes divided Idol fans and cost the show viewers. The same is true about bring equally unqualified and flaming homosexual Adam Lambert as a mentor or allowing Lady Gaga to appear half naked on the program.
Hollywood can't help but corrupt shows families and decent people can watch with sleaze and perversion. I have little doubt that did impact the ratings.
She has NO experience in the music business was completely unqualified to be giving an opinion on the show, let alone picking songs for the contestants.
As Simon Cowell recently said when asked what sort of judge should replace him -- someone that knows what they are talking about.
They can’t replace Simon’s brutal honesty matched up with Paula’s crazy emotional approach. The show is done for in my opinion.
True. But, when she installed as a judge, it appeared to be payback because the dumb, hick audience refused to vote flaming homosexual Adam Lambert as a American Idol the year before and voted for the Christian missionary guy instead. There was a lot of talk Lambert's homosexuality cost him the title and I believe the producers needed something to placate liberals and homosexual activists that whined about Lambert's loss.
No, American's Got Talent is more like the Gong Show. The judge's buzzers replace the Gong.
Huh? The ratings for Modern Family are mediocre at best. It wasn't even close to a top 20 show. 24 in its last season was still getting higher ratings at times.
