KOKOMO, Ind. -- A 9-year-old Howard County girl critically injured by a pit bull over the weekend died at an Indianapolis hospital on Thursday, police said.
The attack happened in the 4600 block of East County Road 200 South on Saturday, said Howard County Sheriff Marty Talbert.
The girl, Savannah Gragg, underwent surgery at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, but died Thursday afternoon.
Police said that Savannah was opening a door at the home to let the dog outside when it jumped on her and knocked her to the floor, biting her on the neck and shaking her violently.
"The child suffered a lacerated trachea, which resulted in a lack of oxygen to the brain," Talbert said in a news release Thursday evening. "Doctors determined the child was brain dead shortly after 3:30 p.m. Thursday."
Family members told police that the dog had never shown aggression before.

First - Sincere prayers for the soul of this young lady. May she find peace in eternity through Our Lord Jesus Christ.
unkus, Interrogator, You two need to be careful.
You are starting to make sense, and that just doesn’t sit well with some on these threads. Speaking of these threads, there must not have been enough fodder in the news today, since this is the second time Chet has posted this story:

That one only got 17 responses, so I guess ole Chet needed more “action.” An update just wouldn’t do.
My God. your hub’s orders might have saved a few kids a bad wounding or worse. good for him.
With so many dozens, if not hundreds, of wonderful dog breeds to choose from YOU HAVE TO WONDER WHAT GOES ON IN THE MINDS OF ANYONE WHO CHOOSES A PIT BULL.
Indeed.
incredibly strong biting, merciless animal snap, against a poor child in 3...2...1. why in God’s name risk it with so many other breeds out there that have quite a bit less of a propensity to ‘go off’? there are argument out there that owning these things makes the owner feel tough but who knows? but why not a dog who is less likely to flip out?
I think it’s a safe bet that these parents would choose another breed if they had it to do all over again.
Only idiots would own a pit bull with children around. You never, ever purposely put your child in a dangerous situation.
Yeah, then one day the dog just turns on the kid. It’s almost completely brainless. That picture is just another confirmation.

I don’t think very much goes on their minds,,,
Dust and cobwebs in their noggin’s,,,
Hopefully their damned dawgs will turn on them instead
of somebody else and rip their livin’ guts out!!!...
Last time I went to the local animal shelter, it seemed that about half the dogs there were pit bulls, some of which were definitely scarred up from fighting.
I told one of the attendants I wouldn't own one. He, of course, gave the standard line about it's all in how you raise them.
I would not own one, period, I told him. I don't like the breed. I also think they're just plain UGLY.
