Umpire Jim Joyce wiped away tears as he took the field, a day after his blown call cost Detroit pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game.
Major League Baseball is still deciding whether to review the call.

Agreed about the way everyone has handled themselves.
MLB should review the call and give the pitcher his perfect game. He deserves it. THEN they should FIRE the umpire. I don’t care how many times he cries!I think they should give the pitcher his perfect game too. But not fire the ump. I had to watch that play three or four times before I was certain the runner was out; and that was in slo-mo. And he *did* apologize to the pitcher. It's not the ump's fault the rules of MLB do not include replays. I say, bring on the replays for ALL sports.
Easy for you to say. Have you ever reffed a game? Little League, Pee Wee's, Jr High, High School? If not, try it, then see how you feel....
It’s just emotion ... understandable over such a major mistake but really unwarranted in light of the Tigers’ reactions and the umpire’s honest contrition for the call.
Some folks don’t understand Baseball.
In Baseball, there is neither ball nor strike, out nor safe, UNTIL THE UMPIRE CALLS IT.
What it looks like to you, me, the players, the guys in the bar, the drunk hanging on a lamppost down at the corner ... is all irrelevant.

It was a tough break for both Gallaraga and Joyce. It is also one of those things that Baseball lore is made of.
Harvey Haddix doesn’t have his name on the list of perfect games even though he was perfect through 12 innings in 1959.
Ernie Shore doesn’t have his name on a perfect game even though he recorded 26 straight outs after replacing a pitcher (Baba Ruth) who got tossed after walking the first batter of the game. (baserunner caught stealing was out #1 of 27)
Milt Pappas walked the 27th batter he faced on a pitch that only the ump thought was a ball.
...My heart goes out to all parties involved but stuff happens.....now go play ball!

I include Joyce in those who have shown some real class. He knows it was a bad call and that’s all he can do.
I’m not going to call for his firing or resignation. If every ump who ever made a bad call were removed we would have computers and cameras doing the job.

And for those folks advocating for instant replay, at what point to you utilize it?
What if this call had been made in the second inning, before the thought of a perfect game even crossed anyone’s mind?
What if it was the 5th? Or the 8th? Or what if they were in extra innings? What is this hit had eventually resulted in a run for the Indians? Could they still decide to overrule the call, change the score and erase a batter’s RBI?
Bad calls happen. BFD.

I listened to three X major league baseball players on the way into work today. All said that Joyce was a darn fine umpire. He just blew a call. Now I am sure no one on this forum ever blew a call.
When I was umpiring youth baseball a retired major league umpire was working the plate and I was the field umpire and I reversed one of my calls. He collared me after the game and told me,
"Never, never, never reverse a call."
"You take it to the grave, Kiddo!"
"And it's not just you. Reversing a call you bring into question every umpire from Little League to the Majors."
(Indeed, every close call I had the rest of that summer's season was met with derision.)
"You especially will never be trusted the rest of your life."
"Every close call you do after that call will be questioned and argued."
"And every close call by any umpire in the League will be questioned."
"Even if they have a photo of the play that shows you wrong, you stick by your call."
"You take it to the grave. To the grave!"
First ballgame, actually the game hadn't even started yet we were still in warmups, I ever got thrown out of was by an umpire who apologized to me for a bad call he made the day before.
I was quite emphatic imparting the wisdom I was given many years before.
Yeah, I saw it....only about 100 times. And, the fact that it wasn't even close isn't the point.
You want to go back and look at calls that weren't even close? Who defines what close is? Where do you draw the line?
It might not have even been close from where we saw it, but we're not the ones making the calls, the umpire is.
Blown calls happen all the time. This is just one that got attention. There's not one call in baseball, or any other sport, that could not be called better by a machine. Not one. Really, there's no practical reason not to fire all umpires based just on the element of error they bring to the game. If folks want the human element in the game, they have to live with the bad calls.
Exactly. Nobody should be reading about, talking about, or thinking about anything but war, recession and oil spills.
This kind of “news” should be banned. And I appoint you to decide what should be considered news.
