Oh, boloney

The game's over, it's in the books. What, are they going to now go back & look at all the close calls in games and make another decision?

MLB should review the call and give the pitcher his perfect game. He deserves it. THEN they should FIRE the umpire. I don’t care how many times he cries!

Despite it being a horrible call, I must say I'm very impressed with the way everyone handled the situation. It could have been made much worse.

Incidentally, Jim Leyland is an absolutely class act himself. The decision to have Gallaraga deliver the lineup to Joyce and then shake hands at home plate was absolutely perfect.

Agreed. That’s baseball. It was a bad call but even umps make mistakes. I speak as a LL coach who has seen MUCH worse calls that that was...I’ve made a few myself.

Joyce is a dolt. He had to know he blew the call but didn’t ask for help. The guy was out by close to a yard. A yard! He should be fired.

I hope dries the tears before he starts calling bals & strikes. He’s home-plate today.

He’ll never get fired or even suspended.

Umpires union.

I know it was a mistake. But I don’t think it is within the spirit of the game to open pandoras box and start reversing plays when games are over. What they need is instant replay for plays down the lines, including 1st base and 3rd base. The argument can be made that the umpires only see a play at first and 3rd from really only one angle. 2nd base and home plate they have multiple views.

but you can’t put toothpaste back into a tube

After watching the interviews with the umpire, Armando Galarraga and his teammates that were conducted immediately following the game I think they would be surprised, quite frankly, with some of the comments on this thread: FIRE the umpire ... Tears for himself ... Joyce is a dolt

Man, that's harsh, especially considering how everyone involved handled the huge mistake with class.

Sorry, but human error is built into the game, and frankly, I’m totally ok with that. No one likes to see the umps determine the outcome, but that’s what happens with humans, we make mistakes.

How many no-hitters have been broken up by bad calls? No one knows, but overturn this, and folks will be clamoring for their pet game to be overturned.

Frankly, game 1 of the 1996 AL playoffs between my Os and those effing pinstripes would be the first one I’d want overturned. Are you hearing me, Mr. Maier?

Jim Leyland is one of the finest men in baseball. He is really a throw back to old school managers. He doesn’t take any crap from anyone, but he loves the game and cares for his players as long as they are giving maximum effort.

No matter how this turns out THIS GAME will go down in History.

OTOH, in the spirit of sportsmanship, I'm seeing a whole lot of class from all involved.

I completely agree. But look at it another way. I never realized there were so many perfect people posting on FR. I guess we should feel honored to be in their (virtual) presence.
