Cat saves Houston-area woman from pit bull attack

PEARLAND, Texas – A Houston-area woman is recovering after two large pit bulls attacked her outside her home, police said.

Cherry Woods, 39, claims her cat, Lima, saved her from the dogs by scratching and hissing at the animals. According to the Pearland police report, the attack happened May 21 just before 8 a.m.

Woods claims she was walking back to her home in the 2300 block of Short Springs Court in Pearland when she saw the dogs from a distance. When they started charging towards her, she tried to fight them off, but they knocked her down several times.

Her husband, Harold Woods, said he was inside the home when he heard her screams. He unsuccessfully tried to separate the dogs from his wife, he said.

That’s when the couple’s cat, Lima, jumped into the fray. According to Woods, the feline clawed and hissed at the dogs and distracted them.

"Our cat came out of the bushes and scratched one of the dogs, and started hissing at it," he said. "They both turned their attention to the cat. I was able to grab my wife and pull her inside the house."

This was out of character for Lima.

"She’s the most reclusive, timid animal I’ve ever seen," Harold Woods said.

But not on that day.

A pit bull has gotten loose several times in area over the past few weeks (the owner is a complete idiot)...when I work outside in my garden, I am armed. If I see Rover approaching; he is toast.

An angry cat is a force to be reckoned with. It it were the same weight as the Pit Bulls it'd have killed them both in short order.*****

That sure is the truth. If cats were as big as pits, they'd be in the zoo....I love cats....

I have one 8 pound cat and 2 dogs, ond half Chocolate Lab and half Weimaraner who weighs 65 lb., and one half Black Laband half Pit who weighs 85 lb. The cat, by being the Princess of Pain, has trained and dominated both of them. It takes an extraordinary dog to take on a flying, hissing, snarling ball knives, fur, and pure pain.

There’s a pattern here other than the breed of dog. Can you see it? The story you just gave me a link to also contained an irresponsible dog owner. Seems to be a pattern that encompasses more than just pit bull owners....which is also incidentally what the experts tend to say is the real problem.

But anecdotal evidence is sure fun!

Here’s another one for you: I have worked in animal shelters, vet clinics, with behaviorists, veterinarians, and trainers, and I have studied the issue for years and years. I have been bitten by loads of dogs over the years, mostly in the vet clinic when they were scared or in pain, with a few exceptions. None of the dogs that have bitten me over the years were pit bulls. One was a black lab. One was a pomeranian. One was a pug (he was not successful because of his flat mouth, but the attempt was impressive), several were dachshunds, one was a glen of imaal terrier, and then there are several that I don’t remember the breed. Some of the worst bites were from dogs that seemed friendly. Most recently, I had quite a painful experience with a pack of dogs. None were pit bulls, but all were irresponsibly owned, or they would not have been in a pack in my yard, pulling a cat apart when I found them.

I can believe it. We had a small, white cat, a stray we found in our garage, half-starved and very dirty.

A few years later my husband was kneeling down doing some planting, and the biggest dog I’ve ever seen wandered into our yard. My husband had suffered a bad bite from a dog as a child, and when he turned around and saw the dog heading for him, he froze. Our little kitty also saw the dog. She began to hiss and chased him all the way around the yard. It actually got funny because it’s a big yard and the dog couldn’t find the gate. But our small kitty kept after him until he made his escape. I could almost hear him saying, “Whew!”

And that’s not the only time she protected us when she thought we were in danger. She lived 20 years. I still miss her.

I used to run with skinhead gangs and knew many a pitbull.

Most of them were like the ones in your pics.

The bad ones you kept your distance.

Never saw a good one turn bad, bad is taught from an early age.

Yes. It’s sad. There was a rescued dog up for adoption in today’s paper. He had been left in a basement to starve and thirst to death. His ears had been cut off as close to his head as possible. He looks scary, but the story said he’s a cuddle boy. Pure white goggie. Hubby and I wished we could take him.

“Never saw a good one turn bad, bad is taught from an early age.”<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Absolutely agreed. I have found (through calling animal control after reading some pit bull attack stories) that many of the dog owners who claimed their dogs had “never done that before/always so nice” already had prior offences with animal control (running at large, neglect, bite incidents, etc.). Some people will believe what is false, even after being offered proof that they are mistaken. Others prefer the truth despite the sting of embarrassment from knowing they are wrong. We often see one more than the other on these threads, unfortunately.
