If we get three perfect games in one month, I’d say MLB has a bigger problem than trying to cancel the All-Star game in Phoenix for their illegal alien pals. Once we start getting a perfect game every week, they really don’t mean anything anymore. Everybody does it.

Jim Joyce has single handedly ushered in instant replay.

‘Zackly. I’m out of sports this year: Basketball has dropped to the same level as Professional Wrestling, and the D’backs are something like a dozen games out of first, and it’s only 6/2....

The human growth hormone era has ended. Pitchers once again have the advantage.

I umpired professionally in 1969. Florida State League Class A, but I am basketball first. I often whine about the changes in the game over the last 20 years.

That is a little extreme. The guy did ‘fess up. Obviously, the rules need to be changed.

I know they have replay in baseball now but I’m still foggy on the part about when it can be used...not very often from what I’ve seen.

How do you make that call? In that situation?

Unbelievable.

Beer Summit at my house. BYOB unless the “One” comes...then we pay for our own, and his plane ticket.

Or we could be seeing the first installment of the liberals’ “Everybody gets a trophy” crowd.

Joyce needs to get to the Gulf and help plug the leak, they should put him in charge.

When I was a youngster and a rabid baseball fan I met the venerable Bill Summers, well up in years after maybe 30 years as a major league umpire.. Naturally I asked him the inevitable question--had he ever made a mistake on a call. Instantly he snapped "Never!"

Difference between mid-season and world series. Difference between individual and team impact.

So right and wrong doesn't count ?

I think this story was attributed to Summers and about Ted William's eagle eye..

Ted Williams was up to bat and a rookie was pitching his first game. He fires a fast ball in tight and Williams takes the pitch. Summers says ball one.

The next pitch is right on the black on the outside and the ump said ball two.

The pitcher came part way down the mound and yells at the umpire when are you going to call a strike?

Summers replies: "Son, Mr. Williams will let you know when it's a strike."

Exactly, now you’re getting it. This is about human beings calling tens of thousands of plays a year. They miss a small percentage and sometimes at the wrong time. You must have baseball confused with the ten commandments.

I would cut Jim Joyce some slack. He made what he thought was the right call and admitted his mistake when he viewed the replay.

Judging from his reaction, it sounds like Joyce is being fairly hard on himself.

I think this is going to result in a lot more calls for instant replay in baseball in almost everything except balls and strikes. Given the number of cameras at the game today they could station an additional umpire in a TV monitor room for this very purpose, similar to what the NFL does now.

I do know that despite the traditionalists at FIFA, they are studying the idea of instant replay, especially now with the wide availability of HDTV and standardized camera positions thanks to the fixed sized of the pitch.
