When I was a youngster and a rabid baseball fan I met the venerable Bill Summers, well up in years after maybe 30 years as a major league umpire.. Naturally I asked him the inevitable question--had he ever made a mistake on a call. Instantly he snapped "Never!"

I think this story was attributed to Summers and about Ted William's eagle eye..

Ted Williams was up to bat and a rookie was pitching his first game. He fires a fast ball in tight and Williams takes the pitch. Summers says ball one.

The next pitch is right on the black on the outside and the ump said ball two.

The pitcher came part way down the mound and yells at the umpire when are you going to call a strike?

Summers replies: "Son, Mr. Williams will let you know when it's a strike."
