The World War II + 70 Years film class assignment for June is to watch Mrs. Miniver. Rent it, buy it, or if we are lucky, catch it on TCM. I make this recommendation not because Mrs. Miniver was released 70 years ago - its New York premier was on June 6, 1942 but because of the subject matter. It is set in England during roughly the first year of the war from September 1939 to August/September 1940. But the heart of the movie involves the civilian participation in Operation Dynamo the evacuation of the British army at Dunkirque.
Hmm. June 6, 1942. Wasn't there another important event on that date? . . .
My Favorite Wife has been done a number of times, with different title and story variations. This one remains my favorite version.

Tear Gas Squad original trailer
Not familiar with Tear Gas Squad? It features 1940s big new star with a million dollar voice. Dennis Morgan, as the chin-busting, heart-breaking leader of the laws new shock troops.

Yeah, but do you remember why Leo McCarey couldn't direct My Fave Wife?
And got Kanin to do it for him?
Thanks for the clippings. Interesting also that Anne Sheridan was Warner's choice for MEET JOHN DOE.

Just playing around with you... truly, thanks for these posts.
Ann Sheridan did make a sort of Frank Capra movie years later, with Gary Cooper in “Good Sam”... sort of the last gasp of Capracorn. Directed by Sam Wood (GOPer) as I recall.

You do realize that D-Day was in 1944?I was thinking of another theatre of operations, but now that your mention it, maybe it was June 4.

Isn’t that the date that Hitler decided to doublecross Stalin and attacked Russia?

"According to modern sources, Garson Kanin stepped in to direct portions of the film after Leo McCarey was involved in a near-fatal car accident."

Made me laugh. Yes, Mr McCarey was known for drinkin’ a bit too much and stepping out on the missus a bit too much. Caught up with him one night in pre production on My Fave Wife. Shade of The Awful Truth in McCarey’s homelife...

Enjoyable thread....doubly so because the Pretender and his retinue are about thirty miles from me at the moment which is a double-downer.
It's also thunderstorming and gloomy and I'll bet the Barak-B-Que-in-Chief is moving his grill and his favorite Japanese Kobe filets mignon into the garage as we speak.....($100 to $300 U.S. per pound, BTW).
