You are not understanding what happened.
This is true and everything on the island still happened. Some people aren’t naking this connection.
I stopped watching after the 3rd episode.

Yes, everything that happened on the island was real. To me, Oceanic 815 crashed, Wedmore and Linus fought to protect the island (each thinking their way was best), the MIB and Jacob struggled, the time travel, the deaths, the exploding jughead, all of it real.
The alternate time line was the Losties desire to rewrite their histories. But this "rewrite" didn't wipe out the Losties' memories of what happened to them when Desmond failed to push the button on that fateful day.
The long awaited show down between Jack/Locke (though not Locke) finally occured, but it was Kate that did him in...protecting Jack, whom she loved. (And Kate killed to protect the ones she loved).
I love the fact that Hurley took the island. (I always thought it would be Hurley).
I thought it terrific that Ben Linus was redeemed. Wonderful story telling.
And Jack got closure with his father, whom he had been seeking to please for all 6 years.
When Hurley said to Ben, "you were a great #2," I knew they were dead. When they died was irrelevant. The cast had gathered to wait for Jack. (Much like at the end of Titanic, when the cast was waiting for Rose)
The last scenes of Jack returning to the spot where we first saw him, bleeding out, looking overhead as Kate and Sawyer flew way. Then came Vincent, to wait with him while he died.
I feel after reading the thread that I'm in the minority, but I couldn't have a better ending.
To me, what the island was that important. It served only as the backdrop to the development of these characters. Hurley, Jack, Ben, Kate, Sawyer...
Loved it!
I always felt that Lost was Jack's story and to see him find his way, his place, and finally reconcile with his father was great. He died saving the island, sacrificed himself.

The “alternate” was a sort of purgatory.
I think Jack’s son David was a way for Jack to resolve his issues with Christian.
It seems Frank, Miles, Richard, Kate, Sawyer and Claire lived a life off island after taking off in the Ajira plane.
Hurley and Ben lived probably for a very long time as protectors of the island. Hurley helped Desmond get off the island with Ben’s help by changing the rules.
Rose and Bernard eventually died on the island.
Is this how everyone else see it? I have trying to digest this since last night.
I have long (since Boon died) been a believer that the island represented some form of purgatory (although it became a little difficult during seasons 3-5) and that people "moved on" after they got their issues sorted out.
So did the wreckage at the end represent the crash (it looked just like the original crash scene) with no survivors...or was that the other plane...or was that simply an opus to the show?
I was a little dissapointed not to see Anna Lucia and Mr Eko. Maybe because they weren't together long enough to form a bond? I can't remember if libby was in the church. And I assume that is why Desmond did not bring Faraday.
Anyway...I hope the writers/producers do a Q&A...much like those of BattleStar Galactica did.

I think that Jack worked out alot with his son, but in the end, when he got to work it out with Christian... excellent.

You are right about Hurley and Ben.
Rose and Bernard died on the island. As did Vincent. But eventually, they all died. Boone, Shannon, Charlie on the island. Locke at the hand of Ben. Ben and Hurely on the island way in the future. It didn't matter when they died, they were all there, in that church, to be together because (and I really believe this) those 100 days spent together were the best days of their lives.
I loved the ending.

I think the end of the show was just showing the set. Now, if there were dead bodies scattered around, then perhaps I would have viewed it differently.
Libby was in the church with Hurley.
My 2 cents. Overall a good ending, but far too many commercials breaking up the story flow.
Those fans most interested in the character relationships are very happy with the ending as it gave them happy closure.
Those fans most interested with the mysteries/mythology of the series will be somewhat disappointed as many important questions (the numbers, lack of fertility, MIB and Jacob’s real identities, the Dharma initiative sponsors from MI, etc.) have been left unresolved.
I am in complete agreement with your assessment of Lost. Had the same exact thoughts this morning after I slept on it.
Until you got to the part about the plane. I disagree that it’s the Lapidus plane. IMO, it’s the original Oceanic plane. Because, afterall, the crash did happen and they were on that island. I think the Lapidus crew got off the island and eventually died - maybe of old age.
I also believe that protecting/saving the island meant protecting/saving the world.
It could very well mean that, but I wasn’t caught up in the island’s purpose as much as I thought it was a great backdrop for the development of the characters and “the save the world” motive only added to the character development.
In complete agreement with the commercial. Absolutely interrupted the flow of the story. Wow, a set of commercials every 4 to 5 minutes.
That was always a problem for the show. I actually gave up originally and left it ride for about two years. Then I happened to rent the first DVD, got the story without those hopeless and meaningless interruptions and finally understood what was going on. So, I was hooked from that point. Now, the fifth season was so weird I started to lose interest again (then my wife died and, rating far behind every other consideration, I lost my main LOST partner). So the fun began to go out of it. Then season six was too complex, given I'd not really seen enough of season five. But, the recap show helped a lot and I very much enjoyed the finale.
Good stuff from the guys at Bad Robot (and I liked that there was no audio on the final bug).

Yes...I think you are correct. I need to watch the last 30 minutes again...but now I remember Christian's words to Jack about some dying before and some dying long after...by which I think he means Hurley and Ben.
