An 81-year-old Army vet from East Northport, Long Island is now behind bars for killing a squirrel. William Thomas was convicted in February of misdemeanor animal abuse, and is now serving out his 30-day sentence. According to Newsday, he used a pellet gun to shoot the animal at his home back in 2008, and neighbors have told authorities that the old man would leave bait in his yard and shoot at animals from a window. He's been arrested 12 times in 5 years for wildlife violations.

His daughter has expressed concern over proper medical treatment while locked up, as he allegedly has a host of health problems, including dementia and hypothyroidism. She told the paper, "He has a lot of confusion and dizziness. Hopefully, the people in there have respect for the elderly."

You could be cruel and just leave it out in the sun to expire from natural causes. This happened at least 50% of the time even though I wasn’t trying to be cruel; I just didn’t get to the traps in time.

"...Anyone know how to keep them from chewing the house?..."

Of course, squirrels can be quite aggressive, and I have seen one face down my cat...they looked like gunfighters, about 15 feet apart, both of them with twitching tails, the cat under the birdfeeder, and the squirrel wanting the birdfeeder. They both decided not to fight, so...maybe a dog or two would be better!

If the guy undeniably has dementia, he’s got serious issues and should not have any kind of gun to fire at anyone or anything.

Spray a solution of water that has jalapeno peppers and dish soap in it over the wood.

Squirrels are rats with bushy tails. They dig up bulbs and make a damn nuisance of themselves. It’s a freaking pellet gun. Pay the old man bounty and buy him more pellets!

My thoughts exactly. They can eat through $50 flower bulbs in a week if you let them. I usually like to zap one in the spring, and then impale him next to the garden to remind the rest of the crowd.

I’m disappointed in this thread. I came for pictures of 89-year-old squirrels, killer squirrels, etc.

Squirrels aren’t animals, but the vanguard of an extra-dimensional army of parademons set to invade Earth and exterminate the human race.

He should be lauded as a hero!

And just remember, *SQUIRRELS ARE EVIL*!!!

;-P

A simple Air pumped .177 works fine for me. Stock has 9 notches of April 21st.

You ought to hear those buggers sneer and scream at me when I go out in the yard.

As a kid I would hunt and eat squirrels - they were good. My older brother would say “they’re just rats with furry tails”.

My old man had me grab my pellet gun once so he could shoot a squirrel on the bird feeder. My mom was “Oh Harvey - don’t try to shoot it - just shoo it away.”

Well, my old man shot and missed the squirrel, but hit the bird feeder. It was the glass kind - broke both panes! The only time I saw my old man’s rage get the better of his judgement. It sure was funny though - even to my dad as he immediately saw his folly!

I knew this had to be the NYC area or San Francisco.

He got jail time for shooting at rats with fuzzy tails.

People should not “have an obligation to be humane” to some living entities and not to others. By what basis are you discriminating? Do you have any logic to this? Either it is okay to kill an animal or it is not.

Do tell us what that answer is to be.

Our dog couldn’t have done it. I’m thinking raccoon, but I can’t be certain.

Probably racoon. We had a racoon that would peel the rubber gasket from around one of our screen windows and then just lift the then unanchored screen and climb onto the porch. Finally got rid of them by trapping.

But that was years ago and now they're back. I have at least three racoons, one of which doesn't look like he's doing well. He's missing his tail and is balding. Anyhow, they treat my yard like a spa. They get onto my porch to eat the cat's food and then either sit on one of the chase lounges around the pool or he'll sit on the top step IN THE POOL. Like he's freaking bathing!

And now they've figured I'm such an easy mark I caught one traipsing through my yard in broad daylight.

I don't have a problem shooting them but would have preferred trapping and relocating them. But with them having lost their fear of humans and then there is the sickly looking one... well, I can't wait much longer to see if the traps are going to work again.
