A Gorgeous, Impractical Beast (Aston Martin Rapide)
WSJ ^ | 05.22.10

Posted on 05/21/2010 3:57:22 PM PDT by Perdogg

The new Aston Martin Rapide is a lovely car, to be sure, and driving one around town creates precisely the same effect on the populace as would a young Paul McCartney striding through Waterloo Station in 1964. Never mind the panties. Investment bankers throw their tighty-whiteys at this car.

MONGO LIKE!!!!

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

OK. Two Aston Martin stories:

1) Aston Martin was building autos for 75 years before they made their 10,000th car. Think of that for a while.

2) The DB series of Aston Martins (i.e. AM DB4) were manufactured when wealthy British industrialist David Brown purchased the marque to save it from the scrap heap.

At a cocktail party, a friend of DB asked him if he could buy a new Aston for cost. “Of course!” was the reply.

The man went to a dealership, selected his options and some months later his Aston was delivered. The price? Twice the sticker price for the general public.

David Brown had been subsiding each car (in other words, the company was loosing LOTS of money) and he was only happy to have the opportunity to actually sell a car at cost.

Lovely machines. Lovely. Almost bought a DB II/IV once, but was just a bit too short of cash... It was $9,500.

The caption says it was a test in front of the factory. I guess if you toast one, you just go get in the next one in line. Man, what a great job! (Hey, someone has to do the random stress test on those suckers. Keep my head dry and my fridge stocked, I'd otherwise do it for free. )

I frankly prefer my 2002 minivan. For one thing, I can see out of it. For another, up to six people can ride with me in comfort (the three in the back had better be good friends, or under 15). Finally, if the police notice I seem to be reading a little high on their radar, they ponder whether there’s a calibration fault just long enough for me to make a getaway.

Gorgeous car... but if I were in the market for a gorgeous, high performance British sedan, I would just as soon take the new Jaguar XJ 5.0 SC at half the price.

I also HATE Dan Neil's sophomoric, pop culture writing style. He sounds like a nerdy high school kid writing in the school newspaper who thinks he is the smartest one in the building. Since WSJ put him in a few months ago, I find I have less and less interest in their cars section.
