Good morning gardeners! If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.
If you have a question about gardening or just an observation to share please feel free to stop by and participate. Paraphrasing Freeper fanfan -There are no stupid questions, just honest ones.
Or strawberry! I did almost no work in the garden Wednesday because those bright red flashes between the leaves seduced me, and I stood there popping them into my mouth as fast as I could check them for mouse damage. Eight cats, and I've got a strawberry patch full of mice.
From the taste of the tilapia I ordered the last time (and it WAS the last time), I think I know.
You can plant radish any time. They are quick growers - something like 25 days I believe. Find an empty space and sow radish seeds. Harvest. And do it again. Easy.
Got my start from my grandmothers garden...I’ve given a few people pieces to start...But if you got a garden supply or farm supply store, they often have them to purchase. Where are you located?
I get my manure from a local dairy, I know the owner how he produces and I get it free, by the truck load.
Thanks for the pix. I’ll know what to look for. I could probably use the 4 valve manifold, but it will take more time to set up. I could also use just a single one. I’m thinking of setting out a revolving sprinkler that will cover the entire area and setting it so it comes on once a day. I can probably get by with nothing extra for the established gardens — just a good soak down before I leave and another when I get back. But, the veggies (being small and new) need a drink every day, just in case.
Wal-Mart had the single ones also in manual and digital.
Halfway between DC and Richmond. The ones at the garden center really didn’t look good, and then I was in Walmart and right there in the vegetables section (don’t look Ethel!) was a pile of great big horseradish roots for $3 each which is a great price. But are they treated like potatoes to keep them from growing?
SHe must ALWAYS be a part of whatever I’m doin in the garden....When she was a puppy, I left a six pack of petunia till morning....Good thing I went back out before bed. She’d dug a hole and dumped them ....She has learned “no dig”...
By far the smartest dog we’ve ever had.
Took her to town with me while the Amish guys were eating lunch....We’d stopped at the gas station....She got up front, nudged my arm and look over at the DairyQueen next door and lick her lips....
Don’t tell me dogs can’t talk.
As the the radishes. We plant them off and on all summer....Just a few at a time.
That's COW manure. I'm quite sure that tilapia I had was fertilized with nightsoil, which has to be composted for at least a year before using safely, and the gross-out factor is longer than that, at least for me. A hundred-year-old privy would be okay.
Don’t know ....Ask Your green grocery....Last year my sweet potatoes came from one that was sprouting and they couldn’t sell.
My garbage-can potatoes are doing great! I planted red potatoes and Yukon Gold. My onions are looking good and my beets are coming up. I planted carrots last weekend. The strawberries have blossoms on them, and I think my horseradish is FINALLY making a showing.
This weekend, I’m going to be prepping the garden to start my Three Sisters garden and green peppers.
I’m still trying to learn about fertilizers and when to apply, etc.
Looks like I might have to buy tomato plants though. My seedlings don’t look healthy. I’m planting them all in five gallon buckets this year.
LOL! She looks like she’s a border collie. I know border collies are extremely smart.
Greetings all,
We are getting estimates on tree (Ginko) removal, and trimming of a large Oak. Pricey.
Well, I’m back to Lowe’s tonight for more tomato stakes - my seedling survival rate is the highest it’s EVER been - so I’ll pick up the seeds too.
One one level, I’m thrilled that gardening is going so well this year. On another, I’m worried that God is giving us one (last?) good summer to prepare for dreadful times coming. Ora et labora!
My Walmart is sold out of pressure canners - I’ll hit a different one tonight.
She is both ...a border collie and extremely smart.....Don’t know if I’ll ever get any other breed of dog...She’s come and got me more than once when dad was in need of something. AKA a “Timmy’s in the well” moment.
what a beautiful pic-nice combo.....
Mmmm...the good stuff.
That’s great!
We have a border collie, too. She’s just now turned 9 months and already amazes us with how fast she catches on.
Our veggie garden wasnt fenced originally. I didnt have to do it cuz “Holly” was quite respectful of the boundaries & wouldnt cross into it. In fact, whenever her favorite ball accidentally got tossed/bounced into the garden, she would just run up to the very edge of the garden & stare at the ball until we went & fetched it for her.
However, I had to break down & put up a 3 ft high fence around the perimeter of the garden when the neighbor’s little dog & cat would trespass recklessly across our garden. The cat was the worst transgressor - i caught her leaving nasty treasures behind so the fence was expedited.
Anyway, border collies are the best, no doubt!
