Write an entire page of text, IN ENGLISH, grammatically correct and without misspellings. Using a dictionary or spell check is cheating.
Balance a checkbook without using a calculator.
Carry on a 30-minute conversation, IN ENGLISH, with someone you respect. Using words such as "like", or "dude", or phrases such as "I'm just sayin'" reset the clock and you must start over. If at the end of the 30 minutes they don't think you are an idiot, you have succeeded.
Get a job (and filling out forms for gov't handouts is NOT a job). Undocumented day labor is also NOT a job.

How to cook. And I don’t mean go get boxed items from the store and prepare with directions. I mean how to cook from scratch, at least the basics like breads. Learn how to make biscuits and cornbread from scratch. Also, just a little tip, buy several jars of small mayo that can be used quickly without refrigeration. Mayo can be used in place of eggs in baked products. By buying in small jar sizes, you can use it up in a batch or two of bread/cake and so on and you won’t have to worry about buying fresh eggs.

Oh, and learn how to make soap from ashes (lye soap). It’s not that difficult and while some will call me coocoo, I fear an EMP more than anything and how it would take for infrastructure to be repaired.

The best skill anyone can have is thinking outside the box. Being able to improvise and make things McGuyver style will be crucial. After that you can do most anything as long as you do not try to ignore the laws of physics.

I used to be very good at diagramming sentences, better than the English teacher because I learned it in Latin class.
The stupid English teacher started off the year on the wrong foot with me. He went around the class asking everyone how many books they had read over the summer. I told him, 11 over the twelve weeks. He said that he didn’t believe me. Anyway the guy used to have the students mark each others’ papers and I had to keep raising my hand to explain that my answer was actually more correct than his and should not be marked wrong.

Sewing, easy. Tailoring not so easy, but I doubt anyone would need it. I figure I could make income sewing and repairing clothing if things get bad. Everyone needs clothing and bedding.
