This seems terribly un-American to me, spying on one's friends, family, and neighbors. However, our little ones (and not-so-little ones) are being actively encouraged to do so to see "who is the best American." That just smacks of leftist doublespeak to me. No wonder the schools no longer teach Animal Farm and 1984; that would give kids insight into what is being done to them.
Holy heck, it’s not satire. Check the website, have barf bag ready.
Whether this is a bad idea depends on what they’re supposed to be watching for. If they’re keeping an eye out for criminal activity, gang activity, whatever ... good. If they’re policing environmental problems, separation of church and state, or political opinions ... not so much.
The Boy Scouts have always emphasized good citizenship, and part of being a good citizen is keeping your eyes open for the safety of your community.

Das Hitler Jugend revived. just give them Obama t-shirts..
Good satire hits too close to home.
The FAQ makes it sound pretty benign but who knows.
It is satire.
“Remember, just because they weren’t charged doesn’t mean they weren’t guilty. Stay vigilant!”
"Wasting" water resources? Throwing away grass clippings? Not washing recyclable plastic bottles before putting them in the recycling bin?
Yeah, it’s satire.
"...SnapScout and SnapScout Reports are produced and developed by MiniTru, LLC. Created in 2008 by George Parsons and Winston OBrien..."
Okaayyy.
GEORGE (Orwell...)
PARSONS (The guy whose kids turned him in)
WINSTON (Winston Smith?)
O'BRIEN (His protagonist)
Interestingly...my browser won’t open the site again. It fails consistently, though it opened the first time.
It is satire, but I think it is squarely aimed at provoking the right, not the right doing a realistic satire of the left.
The left is far more Orwellian than the right. As others have said, it is easy to tell exactly what the Left is up to by listening to what they accuse others of.
I wish I could get into it again. It looked like pretty good satire, too, but the devil is in the details when judging...:)
Ah. I wasn’t able to get the link to work, so couldn’t do much research.

Once you've found something suspicious or caught someone in the act, you can tag it to report what type of crime it or just to let us know it "Looks Suspicious".
After you've tagged it, you can enter the name and address of the people in the photo, too.
The photo gets submitted to our super secret servers, where a team of trained security professionals reviews every image for possible illegal activity.

Q: Who makes SnapScouts?
A: SnapScout and SnapScout Reports are produced and developed by MiniTru, LLC. Created in 2008 by George Parsons and Winston OBrien, MiniTru LLC leverages modern technology to address the timeless threats to democracy and freedom.
Q: Why did you make SnapScouts?
A: We made SnapScouts because America is more threatened today than it ever has been before. We made SnapScouts because terrorism knows no boundaries. We made SnapScouts because America is the land of freedom, and the only way to check the government is to distribute power to the local level. We made SnapScouts to empower real Americans to connect with one another and expose those moments of truth that we all know, but can’t always say out loud. We made SnapScouts because we love America.
Q: Where does all this information go?
A: MiniTru, LLC believer in a transparent, open source approach. All applications will eventually be released under a GNU license, and all content is copyrighted via Creative Commons. However, given the nature of the app, we store all content at our secure datacenter until our staff of professional law enforcement and criminologists can ensure that all crimes have been properly logged and reported to local authorities. Once the information is deemed non-useful or the investigations associated with the reports are no longer active, we will post the reports online for review. Remember, just because they weren’t charged doesn’t mean they weren’t guilty. Stay vigilant!
Q: So who’s making money off this?
A: In short, no one. MiniTru, LLC. is a non-profit organization created to find modern solutions to the timeless threats to democracy and freedom. We are funded by a variety of organizations, including but not limited to CCTV UK, Minutemen Civil Defense Corps, XE, and the Centre for Defence and International Security Studies.
Q: Should I be concerned if my child is taking pictures of me?
A: Only if you have something to hide! But seriously, we realize that reasonable actions can sometimes look suspicious. If you’d rather not involve the authorities, Keep an eye out for SnapScouts Reports it let’s you monitor what reports have been filed about you or anyone in your network and negotiate with the reporter anonymously coming soon!
Q: Does it really work?
A: After only a three-month trial of SnapScouts in England, Indonesia, and Germany, we are proud to report over 600 crimes reported.
Q: Aren’t you concerned that this will lead to profiling?
A: SnapScouts was designed and developed for children to use, before they form stereotypes of other people. They’re the perfect reporters, unbiased and unprejudiced by media concepts.
Very strange. Worked the first time, and those names jumped out (I missed the little “Minitrue LLC” bit) but when I went back in, couldn’t do it.
