I am glad my kids and I are not part of this trip. I can hear them say, “Are we there yet dad?” Ten minutes later, “Are we there yet dad?”.....

I thought they started lowering it last night. Been looking for updates all day. No news is bad news?

Be nice if some Engineering-type Texan can chime in on pressure of the oil vs. weight of the big thingy.
They aren't counting on it holding the oil down. The box will cover the site of the leak so it can be pumped from the funnel at the top of the box.

It’s worked in the past but has never been attempted at these depths.
The precautions of pressure and 42 degree temps (clogging) have been compensated for so I think there’s a pretty good chance it will work.
Or do you know a lot more about the subject to back up such a statement?
To: the invisib1e hand
As long as the internal pressure of the pipe going up is lower than the ambient pressure where the oil is discharging from the blow out valve...yes.

Sort of recalls an old-fashioned barn-raising, isn't it?
Bar-b-que afterwards?

Last I read the “dome” had reached within a few meters of the sea floor and the robot subs were slowly positioning it over the main leak.
A quote from one engineer stated: “if all goes well it should be functioning sometime Sunday.

I’m sure there are a ton of cameras down there. I’d be glued to them if they’d only share...

Yup. I wonder if they will still be pumping the oil at the top, or if they will just let if free flow to the oil tankers?

Have they released any actual footage of the blowout valve leaking?

And as long as the thing doesn’t tip over when it hits the bottom, or hits trash and debris on the bottom. Or gets pulled sidesways from the pull of the hose going back topside.
Lots of ways it can go wrong.

It’s a joke from way back.
Somebody started a worried thread about a plane her husband was on - and then asked other people to carry on with it, because she was ‘just getting into the shower”.

The debris and footing at the bottom has been pre-cleared by robots.

Sure, things can go wrong...but theoretically, the fiziks are good on the idea.
