...his recent campaign to wheat-paste an anti-war quote from President Eisenhower across American cities to promote his touring revival of the Floyd staple The Wall unexpectedly proved his point, after his employees pasted the quote over the storefront of Solutions speaker repair in Silver Lake. The wall has served as an impromptu fan memorial to the late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith for nearly a decade.
Smith passed away in Los Angeles in 2003, and fans have left personal messages and quoted lyrics on the wall, the backdrop to the cover art of his album Figure 8, ever since. But as of Monday night, fans noticed that the wall also featured Waters image of a soldier cradling a child with the Eisenhower quote nearby...
It was absolutely an accident, Waters said. I didnt want to disrespect Elliott Smiths fans, and Ive instructed (the team) to remove the wheat paste immediately. It was a random pasting in the normal course of this, and I want to make it public that we had no intent to offend or cover up something precious.
...Its not like this was some pristine monument and Roger Waters is the Big Bad Wolf who covered it up, Waters said.
Thats why I was so incensed when I read that article that said I paid someone to disrespect Elliott Smith, Waters said. I admit I didnt know his music, but Ive talked to people who do and its clear he was a young man who felt deeply, and any empathetic person wouldnt have an issue with publicizing that quote.
I would guess, and this is only a guess, he said, but its my guess that he would have been sympathetic to that message.

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.” - Eisnehower (R)
I doubt that Eisenhower would be happy to see his legacy co-opted into an commercial advertising campaign for a series of high-dollar concerts by a Socialist opponent of all war including the Allies battling against the Axis powers in WWII.
The wall that was covered over
Yes. That is exactly what they represent.
So maybe “democratic” socialist dictators and the followers of the “religion of peace” should stop STARTING wars!
He’s absolutely said that he wished we hadn’t gone into battle against Germany. He lost his daddy and still has issues.
Nazi Germany’s treaties weren’t worth spit. Hitler was an a&&hole and Stalin a douchebag.
All that I have read on Waters I never really got a sense of him being a Socialist. I get more that he just hates war period and figures it should be avoided at any cost.
he is a fox hunter and openly supports such. (in fact its reported he left England due to the ban on Fox hunting)
He is dead set against War because his father was killed in WWII. He backed Obama but now he is Dead set against him because Obama sent more troops.
So My take on him is he is pro anti-war not pro political movement of any kind.
At least that is the sense I get from his statements. I disagree with his stance but he seems to stick to his guns and takes to task ANY politician who makes war.
His father died at Anzio and he never got over it which is sad. It does not excuse his leftist BS. Waters, the humanitarian, practically terrorized fellow founder of Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright.
Wright died recently and he was a quiet man who supposedly was very kind. Waters is not a kind man.
But, now that you've brought it up, unless the human gestation period is significantly longer for British women than for other human females, Roger Waters absolutely DID NOT lose his father during WWII. He was born in 1943.
Roger Waters was born in 1943.
The whole “father died at Anzio” thing is a MYTH.
...unless he died there in a car accidenty or something some time AFTER 1943. At any rate, he was most defintely NOT a WWII casualty.
He is a known outdoorsman who also likes to fish. He treated Rick Wright like crap. Roger was usually snarky in every PF interview.
One of my faves is when Rog and a a young Syd Barrett were interviewed on TV by some stupid famous classical music critic. The man was saying why does the music need to be so loud. Roger was snarky while Syd was incredibly polite and charming. Poor Syd (real name Roger) Barrett cracked up from drug use. He seemed liked a very nice guy.
My impression of being in Pink Floyd is it was fairly miserable due to Waters. He made Rick Wright’s life pretty miserable.
That comment makes no sense at all, quite frankly.
Born in Great Bookham near Leatherhead, Surrey, Waters grew up in Cambridge. His father Eric Fletcher Waters fought with the British army in World War II as a member of The Royal Fusiliers Company C. He died in combat at Anzio Italy in February 1944 when Waters was five months old.[7]
Actually, you’re right, it doesn’t make any sense. WWII in Eurpoe wasn’t over until 1944. Sorry about that everyone.
The whole father died at Anzio thing is a MYTH.

The battle of Anzio begun on January 22 1944 with the landing of 110.000 american and british troops under the command of general Lucas. The german were totally surprised. Kesselring, the german commander, hadn't any reserves to face the attack. He gathered all the disperse german units in the Rome zone and he ordered some troops in northern Italy to deploy defending the road to Rome. He also transformed some anti aircraft units into anti tank units and deployed them surrounding the allied beachead. Meanwhile he recalled from the Gustav line the recently deployed 3rd Panzergrenadier and Hermann Goering divisions (two tough german units). The situation for the allies was excellent but general Lucas didn't ordered the troops to attack until it was too late for an easy breakthrough, instead he prefered to consolidate the beachead first. This delay in the attack costed the allies a lot of casualties, when Lucas decided to attack his troops faced a rough german defense, and finally it meant the failure of all the operation.

So to him, World War II was a giant rip-off of the poor “deserving”? The wealth should have been “redistributed” more “fairly”?
Politicians never fail to disappoint me, and even though Ike was a WWII hero, I guess he joins the ranks of politicians.
Roger and Gilmour are both Socialists. Rog has been since he got married (I believe in the 1970s) and from what I read his wife was even farther to the Left.
Gilmour has called himself a Socialist in interviews as well.
I recognize their politics and take their political outburts with a grain of salt.
In the 2008 campaign the "flying pig" from Animals was painted with an Obama logo and antiChristian, antiHillary, and antiBush statements. His tour endorsed Obama. He may have regrets over that endorsement but it is too late to change the history.

I don’t know, but since the war went from 1939 - 1945 and anzio was fought from Jan. 22 - May 25 of 1944, I’d say he most certainly could have lost his father during WWII.
You may be reading more into that than is there. IIRC Eisenhower's statement was akin to the "Guns or Butter" argument that is ongoing in the different economics schools.
