Stupid. Labs are fine the way they are.

Well, at least it helps the parent’s give birth to dogs which should, in theory, have fewer inherent defects.

I understand they are smart dogs, but I want my dogs to have straight hair.

I really don’t see what’s different about breeding two purebreds together on purpose and cross-breeding two purebreds on purpose. If people like the result, how is any harm done?

Never cared for labs, too obsessed with fetching. Terrier guy myself, independent, tough and a good companion

Better than having hyperactive face tearing pit-boodles.

I can understand how the creator of the labradoodle can feel some dissappointment in his breeding, but they are very nice dogs.

Our dog sheds like mad and wants to be around us 24/7, but border collies are priceless!

The labradoodle is now recognized as the first of the so-called "designer dogs", selling for more than $1000 a puppy. In essence, it is a mutt, or mongrel, yet it has raced ahead of pedigrees in terms of price and desirability.

Aren't all purebreds crosses from earlier breeds? Not sure what the problem is. As far as I can tell, purebred dogs are just mutts that a bunch of people agree on.

So what if the other breeds disappear? They only exist as breeds because of the self appointed guardians of breed purity in the AKC and UKKC (?)

Breeds came about because someone needed certain characteristics to assist them in their work, or thought a certain mix might lead to a better companion.

That's all that was done with the XXXX-doodle dogs. The only reason they are not considered a "breed" is because the Guardians of all that is Right have not ordained it so.

WGAF what they think??

has pushed out other breeds in terms of desirability.

What a maroon. Apparently, innovation and development of more popular alternatives should be discouraged. Let's make sure that we never develop a more popular vehicle, a more desirable computer, or a more enticing food. Oh, the horrors!

Non-shedding is a fantastic feature in a house dog. Our Bichon-Cocker has been a great dog.

I've had Labs my whole adult life, and obviously I love the breed. Currently have 2 males -- ages 13 and 11.

That said, I have nothing against the Labradoodle. I think Standard poodles are great dogs, and the combination of the two breeds was bound to produce, as it has, intelligent, healthy, active dogs.

We have a goldendoodle who looks remarkably like the one in the pic.

I've since met oodles of doodles, and pretty much without exception they are great dogs -- gentle, wonderful dispositions, and healthy. And they don't shed. What's to be sorry about?

We have a cockachon. (Cocker / Bichon Frise)

He's a noisy little bugger, but otherwise a pretty swell doggie.

I “inherited” a “taco terrier” from my parents some years back because it was too high strung for them (miniature fox terrier and chihuahua mix). It was high maintenance for a couple years but now it is a great, great dog. I just love the little rascal.

There are lots of health issues associated with Labradors and Poodles and ultimately Labradoodles if people are not careful.

GPRA = Generalised Progressive Retinal Atrophy in simple terms ‘night blindness’

CPRA = Central Progressive Retinal Atrophy ‘daytime blindness’

HD = Hip Dysplasia, the hip is made up of a ball and socket joint, clearly anything that goes wrong with this close association of one bone with another, in this case the femur (thigh bone) and the pelvis (hip) leads to disability

ED = Elbow Dysplasia

OCD = Osteochondritis Dissecans. This disorder occurs when calcification does not follow cartilage growth. The cartilage continues to grow, becomes thicker than normal, and vessels from the bone marrow are unable to penetrate

SA = Sebaceous Adenitis is a hereditary skin disease, visible symptoms are thickening skin, scales, excessive production of dandruff (hyperkeratosis), patchy hair loss, and often secondary infections accompanied by a musty odor
While SA may be an autoimmune disease, it is recessive in its mode of inheritance, requiring defective genes from both sire and dam. Currently it appears to be a simple autosomal recessive, meaning it is transmitted by a single gene from each parent and not sex linked. Such genetically produced diseases cannot be cured, but they can be treated and can be bred away from. For further information on SA please visit this link

ADDISONS DISEASE (Hypoadrenocorticism) is a rare but serious disorder of the endocrine system caused by the gradual destruction of the cortex of the adrenal gland, most commonly by the body’s immune system. (Cancer, haemorrhage, or certain drugs can also cause adrenocortical destruction.) The result is a decrease in production of glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids - adrenal hormones that are necessary for a wide range of body functions. Deficient production of these hormones produces a diverse array of clinical signs, many of them vague.
Both Standard Poodles and Labradors are breeds that appear to have an increased risk for this rare disorder.
