A Trip Down Market Street Before the Fire 1905
Pictures San Francisco's main thoroughfare as seen from the front window of a moving Market Street cable car, before the downtown area was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. This unusual record has been called the first "structural film" because it follows exactly the externally imposed structure of the car ride.
I’ve always enjoyed this one because it is more “realtime” - it doesn’t have that “sped up “ quality so many really old films have.
I am ignorant and can not do linkage but go to youtube and search Scott Walker/Montague Terrace.
It is footage of either the same scene AFTER the quake, or it is post war Berlin. Either way it is an AMAZING counterpart to this film. Trust me its worth it.
Very cool film and the added bonus of no flaming S.F. fag parades yet.
The great 1906 earthquake and resulting fire changed the scenery shortly thereafter.
