Women struck with bat and robbed in Bucktown

They were two young women out on the town and celebrating success.

One was 24-year-old Stacy Jurich, a recent college grad who earned a glowing work review.

The other was Natasha McShane, 23, an exchange student from Ireland attending the University of Illinois at Chicago.

At about 3:30 a.m. this morning, they were walking to Jurich’s Bucktown home from a bar in Wicker Park when the night turned ugly.

A robber attacked them with an aluminum baseball bat near railroad tracks in the 1800 block of North Damen. After the attack, the man stole their purses and ran away. Both women were beaten unconscious and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital, where they are in the intensive care unit.

“Jesus, why would they do that? It’s crazy,” said Jurich’s stepfather, Rick Van Etten.

I lived in this nabe briefly (summer of 1998), and have walked under this viaduct several times. Despite the gentrification, you still had problems back then with the hookers and junkies, especially along North Avenue (things got even worse as you went west toward Humboldt Park). Most of the muggings and burglaries were by desperate junkies.

We have a real problem in our cities with young women who think that nothing can stop them, and don't realize how truly vulnerable they are to the elements.

the real problem Mr.Jurich is people like you who think this world is ladedah....its not....its a frighteningly dangerous place ....

we have to stop thinking we're safe....especially if your skin color is white........

Walking around the tracks is dangerous any time of day.
Two girls going there after dark is suicide.
All thing considered they were lucky. A whole lot worse could have happened. I'm sure they will take a cab like normal people from now on.

They must have been drinking and lost their normal God given sense of fear. I'm a big strong guy but even I, looking at those dark tracks at 0330, would have thought, maybe this isn't such a good idea.

That's exactly right. I work with a few 20-something young ladies who do not realize the danger of staying out all night at bars and nightclubs and then walking home alone in the wee hours of the morning. They think they are completely safe, that is until something bad really happens.
