I use an Acer laptop here at school with XP . Every day before I go home I set the computer to stand-by so when I come in morning I don't have to wait for the computer to boot . Well , for the past two mornings , when I pushed the power button nothing happened . The power lights were on but the computer would not come on . Had to re-boot both times in order to get the computer on . Any idea of what the problem might be ? The computer " whizzes " here at my school in Japan haven't a clue ) . Any help appreciated !
Probably to have the IT guys do system updates
Our vice-principal told us to always leave computers on stand-by .
You leave it plugged in all the time?
Is that right?
Well here’s what happened to me on a similar Averatec machine.
1. Stop using standby as it can cause the machine to shut down awkwardly. Just shutdown and restart.
2. Sounds like an over heat problem when it does not respond to keyboard.
3. To resume use from standby try hitting the spacebar to get its attention, rather than hot keys.
4. Make sure you have the manufacturer’s “rescue” disk with XP and all the drivers on it.
5. Consider re-imaging the machine. It seems like every two years is about right.
6. Whether to use anti virus is your call. As of now I think they cause more problems than they are worth. I’m just careful, have recent backups and re-image when necessary.
This computer is only 9 months old BTW .
Load Windows 7 and get some new IT guys. The BS about never turning off the cpu is a fallacy perpetuated by hackers that love to use your resources....
Yes . Our vice-principal ordered us to leave all computers on stand-by .
I wouldn’t think so, but it’s difficult to say for certain without more specific information about the programs in question.
I have a 4 year old averatec with the exception of a dying battery, has been a trouble free unit.
A quick fix is to the following.
1) Go to “Start”
2) Go to “All Programs”
3) Go to “Accessories”
4) Go to “System Tools”
5) Go to “System Restore”
6) The Radio Dial button that is checked should be to “Restore My Computer To an Earlier Time”
7) Click “Next” below in this window.
8) Click on any bold date. I would do 1 week at least just to be certain.
9) Click “Next” and “Next” again on the following web window.
This will take about 10 minutes more or less. When your computer comes back up. Your Virus protection will be off. Just update it. This will take a few minutes. If it gives you still an error after you tried update it. Then just do another reboot. It may have to try to download all your updates one more time, but should run fine after this. Once everything is done you should be good.
If not, then I recommend using “CC Cleaner” which is free. However, if you do not mind paying $20 (or so) for “Advanced System Care”. I have it and love it. It’s been fantastic, and my computer runs extremely fast.
I have 2G of RAM and I’m still running in an Intel M processor. It’s old, but my computer is extremely fast thanks to the RAM and “Advanced System Care”.
Hope this helps you out.

Had a similar problem with my desktop..corrupted boot files. Had to reformat the hard drive.
My Averatec is also four years on second battery and keyboard. Battery is another reason not to used standby. If you are not plugged in, standby will drain the battery down to where it will no longer accept a full charge.
Only problem is the 72 GIG hard drive. It sounded like alot in 2006, but now with 4 megabyte pictures; gets eaten up in a hurry. But it still is a strong machine. I’ve driven many a conference room presentation off of it and it always gets admiring questions.
My work laptop has been doing that...
memory bleed. You need to do an occasional full reboot.
I usually do a full shut down and wait at least 10 seconds then turn it back on and I am good to go for a couple of weeks.
Download the service manual and open the laptop to clean out dust bunnies from the processor fan. It’s either that or your processor fan is failing.
Something tells me the friendly Dell support dude will be doing that soon! Thanks!
LOL! Very good idea.
I did a full re-boot yesterday but the same thing happened this morning .
There's the money shot. And there can be tasks scheduled for shutdown that cannot be completed without a full cycling of the machine (you may have gotten an auto-update of some kind).
Whenever hibernate/standby is screwing up, the first thing to try is shutdown/restart.
Kay... next, Chkdsk the drive (full chkdsk - (check both of the boxes and restart))
Then a good defraggin'
If those turn out fine, and still no joy, then there is probably a TSR or running program that is causing a problem on startup.
First step, make sure to close all programs before letting it go to standby. If that fixes it, then figure out which program, and be sure to leave it off when standing by.
Otherwise, there is something running TSR (terminate and stay resident, background). That is a bit more complicated, and depending on your skilz and knowledge, a job better left to your IT guys.
