A dog who mauled and killed a United Kingdom 18-month-old Saturday in her kitchen is believed to be an American Bulldog, according to English internet website theargus.co.uk.
Sussex police said the dog, which is in police custody, will be destroyed, the website reported.
English police worked through the hours following the tragedy to get the full story. Urfan Ahmed, is named as the dog's owner, according to the news website. He is also the girl's uncle and was not at the scene at the time, although he does live at the residence, the news website reported.
Sussex Police Detective Chief Inspector Trevor Bowles, who leads the investigation, said the toddler was in the kitchen with her mother, Saira Ahmed, and other family members when the dog entered from an outside garden, the website reported.
The dog then picked up the girl and attacked her in front of her family, Bowles said.
"Two workmen at a property nearby heard screaming and ran to the house to help," Bowles said, according to the news website. "They were able to distract the animal, who dropped the baby from its jaws. One of them then pulled the child to safety before an ambulance was called.
"Officers have been working through the night to build up a picture of what lead to this appalling tragedy," Bowles said. "Our inquiries [are] actively continuing and a suspect remains in custody."
An American Bulldog, formerly known an English Bulldog, is taller and more athletic than today's English Bulldog breed, according to the United Kennel Club website, ukcdogs.com.
Bulldogs in England in the 1800s were initially bred to drive cattle. Because of the breed's strength and familiarity with livestock, it became a popular breed in the brutal sport of bull baiting. When the sport was outlawed from England, the original type of bulldog disappeared for a time from Britian, and the shorter, stockier version well-known today was the replacement.
The original Bulldog was preserved, however, by working class immigrants, and was brought to the American South, according to the UKC website. American farmers and ranchers used the Bulldog as a working dog on their properties. The breed was almost extinct by the end of World War II, but breeders John D. Johnson and Alan Scott resurrected the breed under two types, the Johnson dog and the Scott dog.
To get another picture of what an American Bulldog looks like, think of Disney Classic "Homeward Bound." Chance was the name of an American Bulldog puppy featured in the film.
I had never seen one. It’s strange to see a bulldog’s head on a tall dog.
Hamish McDonald, a Scotsman, sitting down with his Glasgow Morning Herald and seeing an article about how the “Brighton Sex Maniac Strikes Again.” Hamish is shocked and declares that “No Scotsman would do such a thing.” The next day he sits down to read his Glasgow Morning Herald again and this time finds an article about an Aberdeen man whose brutal actions make the Brighton sex maniac seem almost gentlemanly. This fact shows that Hamish was wrong in his opinion but is he going to admit this? Not likely. This time he says, “No true Scotsman would do such a thing.”
Antony Flew, Thinking About Thinking (1975)
Obviously, no true English bulldog would do such a thing.
If you think that’s strange you should see my bitch with a bulldog’s head on a mastiff’s body. Her sire was an English mastiff and the dam was an American bulldog.
Dog probably smelled the dirty diaper and just went berserk.

A United Kingdom toddler killed Saturday by her uncle’s American bulldog died from a fractured skull and hemorrhaging, an English news website reports.
Theargus.co.uk reports Sussex police are releasing more information on the shocking attack in the family’s kitchen that left 18-month-old Zumer Ahmed injured and dying in front of her grandmother, mother and three-year-old sister.
The dog’s owner, Urfan Ahmed, 32, was initally arrested and held overnight on suspicion of manslaughter, the website reports. He was not home at the time of the attack but was arrested later. He has been released on bail until July 15 pending further investigation, the website reports.
Zumer was with family in the kitchen at lunchtime when the dog entered from a garden and attacked her face, the website reports. Workmen from a nearby home heard barking and screaming and ran to rescue the toddler. Plumber Saqib Nazir, 32, forced the aggressive animal away with a towel and tools after workers freed the child from the animal’s jaws, the website reports.
“It was awful like a scene from a nightmare,” the news website reports Nazir saying.
“My colleague, Artur, dragged the baby away from the dog. I fended it off with a tea towel.
“It was looking me in the eye and kept growling.
“I held the baby in my arms for 15 minutes. She was still breathing.
“It was truly the most awful thing I have seen in my life.”
The news website reports a neighbor on the scene, Adrian Walker, 35, witnessed the girl’s father screaming “the dog had my girl, the dog had my girl,” as medics worked to save his child’s life.
The dog, who is named Game, is in police custody and will be destroyed, the news website reports.
the more popular they get the more frequent
I posted last week about a Rott attack I knew personally in Clarksville
don't have big dogs unsupervised around kids especially is known vicious
ABDs come in Scott/Standard or Johnson/Classic
they are modern day equivalents of the old Appalachin-Southern catch/hunt dogs of the 1700s and 1800s which were consolidated by Alan Scott and Dr. Johnson in Ft Payne Alabama and NW Georgia respectively in 1960s
Scotts are lanky and snouty and liver lipped
Johnson much more bully and stocky..english faced
The Scott is more authentic to the original
Mine is a hybrid as is the one in that movie pic above
they are very very powerful and should only be handled by folks who can deal with alpha dogs...like me...who have a history of it
children have to be watched
mine is 7 months /70 pounds...so far extremely people easy...my Dobies and Rotts were much more suspicious by now
