If slaves could build the Taj Mahal, why not the pyramids?

A pyramid is a pretty crude architectural device. A simple, straight-sided 30 story building that capably handles weight-distribution is a much more complex achievement. If the pyramids were built by interstellar-traveling aliens why would they choose such an embarrassingly crude plan?
BTW, Paid workers, not slaves probably built the pyramids as a tribute to the egos of pharaohs. Nothing more.
